Argumentative Essay
Opponents claim that some students do not know how to learn without grades. There is a
quotation saying “One of the best things you can say about grades is that students and teachers
are used to them. We know what they mean” (as cited in The Best School. Dave Tomar, para 6).
It means that grades are important things that should be provided in every school. Despite the
fact that grades should be provided in schools, research shows that students do not need grades to
train students in particular skills. More importantly, some subjects in schools do not need grades
in order to improve their selves. For example, in arts, grades cannot be applied because arts have
their own particular skills like drawing, painting, etc. Those skills should be not included in
grading at school because every person has different ability to improve. They can improve those
kind of skills even without grades, and all they need are just have to practice all the time, so that
ability can be better than before. Based on The Best School, written by Dave Tomar, p.6-7,
liberal arts in United States like Alverno College, Antioch College, Bennington College, The
Evergreen College, and New College of Florida do not issue grades. It suggests to all educators
there that they can motivate students without controlling their grades. Moreover, students can
make improvement even without grades, because grades cannot affect students’ abilities. In art
class, even without grades students are more confident to work without having a fear that they
will have down grades. Matt Christenson in The Art of Education University magazine (3 years
ago) saying that the teachers have their own unique set of their students, and it is so important to
know the characteristic of each students also what method that you are running to. Each student
has their own creativity and teachers have to evaluate based on the artistic, the paint use, size and
etc. At the end, students will focus on the learning process rather than their grades just like in
Finland which is the most effective schools based on how the learning system itself.
