HOD Department of Civil Engincering, BIT, Dehradun(UK) “Abstracts-The construction industry bs the main consumer of energy and materials in most countries. Though bamboo hes been used as a Consruction material, especially in developing country, until today its use as reinforcement in concrete structure is very limited due to ‘various uncertainties. Since bamboo is a natural, cheap and also readily available material. The uiltzation of bamboo reinforcement as ‘replacement of stel reinforcement is gaining immense importance today, mainly on account ofthe improvement in the economical aspect ‘combined with ecological benefits. The indusiializaton ofthe material bamboo was supposed 1 solve the problem of uilizing bamboo in ‘the industrial contest, which has been considered an Important strategy for Tocal economle development in many developing countrles ‘where bamboo sources are abundant. Through indusriliztion bamboo is processed and fabricated into diferent standard industrial products which are mainly used as a cheap substitute for hardwood because bamboo grows much faster than timber and is a renewable source afterS-6 years. But inthis process of industraizaion bamboo loses is structural advantages and at the same time also loses the ‘connection tots traditional bamboo culture. The physical and mechanical properties lke compressive strength, tensile strength, Flexural test, Bonding strength, water absorption, density ee. of he selected bamboo species in material testing laboratory. Purpase of the experiments om bamboo srips is for validation and justification of these results confiem the application of bamboo as ceinforcement ‘clement. The study also indicated that different species of solid bamboo 1s available in India. The research revealed out that sold and hollow bamboo can equally be wilized for both furniture products and construction works. The researcher used observations interviews and experiments for collecting data. The utlization of bamboo as a complementary resource material for furniture and construction works ‘Key words -Cost Estimation, concrete, bamboo, reinforcement, Water absorption, bonding stragth I. INTRODUCTION Increasing demand for timber and the depletion of natural forest have encouraged the utilization of many less popular species. Bamboos have for a very long time been used as timber. However, mote understanding of properties and behavior of bamboo timber is imporlant to evaluate the potential of bamboos to produce high quality end products, nails and screws which are normallyused Tor wood. Such shortages restrict the use of bamboo in the industrial context ILLITERATURE REVIEW ‘Ghavami (1995) studied bonding and bending with bamboo in lightweight concrete, Most developing countries hhaveseveral problems, and one of the main problems is hhousingThe housing problem has been related to lack of Bamboo is versatile resource characterized by high strength to weight ratio and ease in working with simple tools, Bamboo is the fastest growing, renewable natural resource known to us. Ii a small wonder, therefore, that this material ‘was used for building extensively by our ancestors. It has 8 long and well established tradition as a building material throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions. It is used in ‘many forms of construction, particularly, for housing in rural areas. But, enough attention had not been paid towards research and development in bamboo as had been in the case with other materials of construction including timber. ‘Compared to stecl, cements and plastics bamboo has many advantages like strength, elasticity and lightness, but also isadvantages in processing and connection: istube structure is very good for tensile and press loadings, but its iregular dimensions and inhomogeneous material structure are not ceasy to be processed by machines and incompatible to the standardized industrial connecting components Moreover, bamboo's easily split canes are difficult to be treated with IssN:2278-5299 research in field of low cost housing projects, Scientists, engineers, and designers need taining and education for finding low cost construction and efficient plans, In additional, specialist systems for education, various information, and vitality of economy are needed The values of the test of compression and shear are dependent on th type of bamboo The tensile strength is higher than the compression strength. with the compressive range 12 to S3MPa, In several tests, Bambusa vulgaris schardand Dendrocalamus were researched the highest valuetwo types fof bamboo, treatment and untreated, The treated specimens were wrapped withl.Smm steel wire on embedded 40mm spacing and cared Negrolin-sand. In this test, treated bamboo, 0.97 Nimms, was more effective than untreated bamboo, 0.52, ‘Nimma, with up to 90% improved bond stress, Masani (1977) conducted an in-depth study outlining the proper ways to utilize Bamboo in construction, A listing of the positive aspects of Bamboo is given, citing examples pertaining to its economical, mechanical, and environmental properties. When used as reinforcement in conerete, rections are given to insure a better performance, including 102 Ihernaional Journal of Latest Research im Sclence and Tecnology discussions on waterproofing, pressure-treating, concrete design, and beam design. This study found that the Bamboo reinforcement arca should be S times the typical steel reinforcement area, and that even when fine eracks develop fn the surface of Bamboo, the load carrying capacity of the member is not reduced. The only negative properties of Bamboo given are its susceptibility to attack by insects, fungi and dried hamboo is prone (o catch fire Amada et al (1997) investigated the mechanical and physical properties of Bamboo. They conducted a thorough investigation into the structure and purposes of the nodes, which they found to strengthen the Bamboo Culm. They also ‘commented on the advantage Bamboo has over other natural building materials with its fast growth rate ‘Mardjono (1998) provided research with the effort to give some sort of organization of a system to building with Bamboo between cultures, species, and countries having varying designs. The objective of their research was to improve the functions of Bamboo buildings by this “organization to provide privacy, safety, comfort, durability, and accessibility, Overall Bamboo used as a structural ‘material suffers from an incredible disadvantage due to inadequate applied scientific research, They do feel that Bamboo products should be brought to the level of acknowledged and received building materials. The results of | their research will be published as a thesis and guide for designing Bamboo structures to be dispersed to people in eveloping countries, A study reported in International Standard Organization (ASO) (1999) fashioned lab manual for determining the physical and mechanical properties of Bamboo. The purpose {or publishing this manual i first ofall so that these methods are available all over the world, Rescarch is done in so many places, very precise yet is stuck inthe laboratories, With this ocument, the methods are made available. Secondly, this document gives a 14 and 124 MPa. The compression strength was observed as 40-62 MPs for specimens 120 mm length and 10 mm widthsthe bond test considered practical step by step explanation of how to perform each test specifically fllowing the International Standard Complement Document “Determination of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Bamboo.” Another complement document is Bamboo Structural Design (1999), Jansen (2000) conducted her study on building with Bamboo. This book covered a wide variety of aspects of Bamboo going back to the structure of the plant and its natural habitat. Tt gives calculations to show why it's economically competitive, mechanical properties, its many uses, its natural durability, and the preservation of the Bamboo. In much more detail, it diseusses the joints and building with pure Bamboo. In relation to this project, her bbook does touch on Bamboo used as reinforcement in cconercte. Listed in her book are several things that are more of @ hassle than steel reinforcement. OF those, the bonding bbetween the Bamboo and concrete is considered the biggest problem due to absorption of water and smooth wall of the Bamboo Culm, Amada and Untao (2001) mention that bamboo is the most effective material in construction by the superior character of ‘bamboo such as being physically powerful, tough, and a low= IssN:2278-5299 ‘cost material. Normally, the Culm of bamboo with outer surface layer withstand strongly to any loading with stronger fracture resistance than the node. It suggests that the fibers in the node do not contibute any fracture resistance. The tensile strength of bamboo fibers almost corresponds to that of stcl ‘The main discovery is that the fracture properties of bamboo
