“Abstracts-The construction industry bs the main consumer of energy and materials in most countries. Though bamboo hes been used as a
Consruction material, especially in developing country, until today its use as reinforcement in concrete structure is very limited due to
‘various uncertainties. Since bamboo is a natural, cheap and also readily available material. The uiltzation of bamboo reinforcement as
‘replacement of stel reinforcement is gaining immense importance today, mainly on account ofthe improvement in the economical aspect
‘combined with ecological benefits. The indusiializaton ofthe material bamboo was supposed 1 solve the problem of uilizing bamboo in
‘the industrial contest, which has been considered an Important strategy for Tocal economle development in many developing countrles
‘where bamboo sources are abundant. Through indusriliztion bamboo is processed and fabricated into diferent standard industrial
products which are mainly used as a cheap substitute for hardwood because bamboo grows much faster than timber and is a renewable
source afterS-6 years. But inthis process of industraizaion bamboo loses is structural advantages and at the same time also loses the
‘connection tots traditional bamboo culture. The physical and mechanical properties lke compressive strength, tensile strength, Flexural
test, Bonding strength, water absorption, density ee. of he selected bamboo species in material testing laboratory. Purpase of the
experiments om bamboo srips is for validation and justification of these results confiem the application of bamboo as ceinforcement
‘clement. The study also indicated that different species of solid bamboo 1s available in India. The research revealed out that sold and
hollow bamboo can equally be wilized for both furniture products and construction works. The researcher used observations interviews
and experiments for collecting data. The utlization of bamboo as a complementary resource material for furniture and construction
works

I. INTRODUCTION
Increasing demand for timber and the depletion of natural
forest have encouraged the utilization of many less popular
species. Bamboos have for a very long time been used as
timber. However, mote understanding of properties and
behavior of bamboo timber is imporlant to evaluate the
potential of bamboos to produce high quality end products,
nails and screws which are normallyused Tor wood. Such
shortages restrict the use of bamboo in the industrial context

Bamboo is the fastest growing, renewable natural resource
known to us. Ii a small wonder, therefore, that this material
‘was used for building extensively by our ancestors. It has 8
long and well established tradition as a building material
throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions. It is used in
‘many forms of construction, particularly, for housing in rural
areas. But, enough attention had not been paid towards
research and development in bamboo as had been in the case
with other materials of construction including timber.
‘Compared to stecl, cements and plastics bamboo has many
advantages like strength, elasticity and lightness, but also
isadvantages in processing and connection: istube structure
is very good for tensile and press loadings, but its iregular
dimensions and inhomogeneous material structure are not
ceasy to be processed by machines and incompatible to the
standardized industrial connecting components Moreover,

Masani (1977) conducted an in-depth study outlining the
proper ways to utilize Bamboo in construction, A listing of
the positive aspects of Bamboo is given, citing examples
pertaining to its economical, mechanical, and environmental
properties. When used as reinforcement in conerete,
rections are given to insure a better performance, including

discussions on waterproofing, pressure-treating, concrete
design, and beam design. This study found that the Bamboo
reinforcement arca should be S times the typical steel
reinforcement area, and that even when fine eracks develop

member is not reduced. The only negative properties of
Bamboo given are its susceptibility to attack by insects, fungi

Amada et al (1997) investigated the mechanical and
physical properties of Bamboo. They conducted a thorough
investigation into the structure and purposes of the nodes,
which they found to strengthen the Bamboo Culm. They also
‘commented on the advantage Bamboo has over other natural
building materials with its fast growth rate
‘Mardjono (1998) provided research with the effort to give
some sort of organization of a system to building with
Bamboo between cultures, species, and countries having
varying designs. The objective of their research was to
improve the functions of Bamboo buildings by this
“organization to provide privacy, safety, comfort, durability,
and accessibility, Overall Bamboo used as a structural
‘material suffers from an incredible disadvantage due to
inadequate applied scientific research, They do feel that
Bamboo products should be brought to the level of
acknowledged and received building materials. The results of |
their research will be published as a thesis and guide for
designing Bamboo structures to be dispersed to people in

places, very precise yet is stuck inthe laboratories, With this

Jansen (2000) conducted her study on building with
Bamboo. This book covered a wide variety of aspects of
Bamboo going back to the structure of the plant and its
natural habitat. Tt gives calculations to show why it's
economically competitive, mechanical properties, its many
uses, its natural durability, and the preservation of the
Bamboo. In much more detail, it diseusses the joints and
building with pure Bamboo. In relation to this project, her

problem due to absorption of water and smooth wall of the
