Grade 3- Reading Across the World Home-Reading Program
Welcome to our grade 3 home reading program! Your child will be responsible for reading 20
minutes each school night this year. I will be tracking their minutes that they read on a
classroom map as they travel across the world. This reading adventure will tie into our social
studies program. Please keep track of minutes read on each country log each school night with
your child. Once a country log is completed with the achieved minutes and signed by a parent
the child will return the log to Ms. Phaneuf.
The child will then move their sticker to their goal country. The entire class will begin in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada and will travel to:
Trip 1. Ottawa, Canada (Capital city of Canada) ~3,500 km from Calgary- Approx. 12 nights of reading
Trip 2. Lima, Peru (Capital city of Peru) ~6,400 km from Ottawa- Approx. 21 nights of reading
Trip 3. Kiev, Ukraine (Capital city of Ukraine) ~12,100 km from Lima- Approx. 40 nights of reading
Trip 4. Tunis, Tunisia (Capital city of Tunisia) ~3600 km from Kiev- Approx. 12 nights of reading
Trip 5. New Delhi, India (Capital city of India) ~6200 km from Tunis- Approx. 21 nights of reading
Total km needed to complete trip = ~31, 800km which is about 105 school nights of 20 minute
reading and the program runs for 115 school days.
Our program will run from October 1, 2019 – June 1, 2020. Students will be encouraged to
make it to India by the end of the program. If a student travels to India before the program
end date, they will get to choose a new bonus country/city anywhere in the world to travel to
next. They will then get to add bonus trip sticker to the country and work towards it
independently through the end of May. For every 20 minutes read, you will travel 300km.
Your child will gain more confidence as a reader and develop reading fluency by reading a
variety of different ways, but always make sure they alternate between them. Young readers
can become better readers by listening to good readers read and by reading themselves.
You may choose to:
● Read to your child while he or she listens
● Read with your child (alternating who reads)
● Listen to him/her read to you
Always be sure to ask your child questions about the book before, during, and after reading to
better judge if they understand what they are reading. Please see the back of this page for
helpful tips while reading with your child.
