Philosophy of Educational Leadership

Educational leaders possess the power to set forth a positive transformative change for

students, parents, and entire communities across the world daily. Sometimes the impact leaders

make are not immediately visible, but the transformative measures that are set into place have the

ability to break cyclical poverty, illiteracy, abuse, reduce jail rates, prejudices, inequalities, and

improve quality of life. Thus, shaping a better society for our humanity’s future.

In helping shape transformative change, an exceptional leader must hold certain qualities

to fully impact the educational system. One quality is the ability to listen to others carefully.

When leaders listen to others, they are valuing their opinions, creating trust, and gathering ideas

and details. When you are able to listen to others full heartedly, leaders are more likely to create

better relationships and make thoughtful decisions. Great leaders are also able to listen

empathetically and understand challenges students, parents, and faculty may face. Instead of

being reactive and punitive, leaders can be pro-active in working together with others in finding

solutions for problems. In addition, leaders can proactively foresee areas which may become

troublesome and effectively plan and execute preventative measures in order to help protect

entire educational communities.

Another quality educational leaders should possess, is an innate high moral and ethical

character. The ability to know right from wrong, and when injustices have been created will help

set high morality in the school community, leading to mutual respect and confidence in the

leader’s abilities. The educational leader should be an honest person, yet diplomatic and tactful

when communicating with others. As a leader, it is also important to be confident, yet humble

and able to acknowledge when errors have been made, therefore setting an example for others

that we are all human and sometimes make mistakes, but we own them and do everything

possible to rectify the situation.

As a future educational leader, I believe it is imperative for school principals to build

positive and safe school cultures in which students, parents, community members, and staff

enjoy being within the school environment. Creating positive school cultures involves creating

high expectations for students and staff with specific goals in mind. It also encompasses building

others up by not being evaluative. Instead, educational leaders should be master coaches for

students and teachers, therefore, helping them grow to their potential. Creating safe school

cultures also entails building respect and trust in professionals. By doing so, educational

professionals are able to demonstrate their professional abilities and talents with more ownership

because they have been entrusted and expected to do wonderful work. School leaders can also

further contribute to the school culture by offering recognition to efforts made by students, staff,

parents, and community members in building the school culture together. Furthermore, the

Educational leader leads by example and is flexible. They are not afraid of taking over any

position within the school when the need arises. This further contributes to the message that we

are in this together and we are here to support each other. Providing adequate support to teachers

in the workplace and always keeping in mind how a teacher has direct impact on each child is

imperative. Therefore, keeping educators well supported with resources and personal well being

is imperative in furthering the creation of an exceptional educational ambiance.

Innovators of education would be another valuable trait of an exceptional leader. Leaders

that are able to see beyond the school walls and do not fear bringing change to the traditional

school setting are groundbreakers ready to change their communities and become a model for

others to emulate.
