Resume of the chapter I

Getting started

In this chapter I learn the features of the internet and the main reason why the internet should be
used in English teaching. The internet has many different ways of communicating and exchanging
information. These ways are categorized as Asynchronous computer-mediated communication,
Synchronous computer-mediated communication and Hypertext.

The asynchronous (CMC) refers to communication that takes place via networked computers; in
other words, the people communicating do not need to be sitting at the computer at the same time; it
can be one to one or many to many. For example, electronic mail (Email), use to send text
messages, but can also used to exchange formatted documents, as text, sound files, pictures,
software and video as attachments. Another Asynchronous is bulletin board in the web.

The Synchronous (CMC) refers to communication that takes place via networked computers, but all
people must be setting at the computer at the same time, because it is live, and can be either one to
one or many to many. For example, chat rooms which you need to download software to use it as,
ICQ, AOL and others. A closely related medium for real-time group discussion is called MOO,
where participants can not only communicate but also engage in simulated activity, such as moving
from room to room or examining objects. The real-time on-line communication can take place not
only with text but also with voice or video. Conference software allows students to communicate in
real time using audio, video, text, or white board.

Hypertext, the World Wide Web is based on principles of hypertext, a nonlinear, linked or layered
form of information organization whereby documents in a database are connected via hyperlinks.
On the Web, pointing and clicking the mouse on a link brings you to a connected document
elsewhere, it includes not only textual information and links but also documents based on graphics,
audio, and video. These documents are referred to as hypermedia, but the words hypertext and
hypermedia are used interchangeably.

In this chapter, people can know what they need and how to access to the internet; they also learn
how to get an internet account and how to create an email address.

There are five reasons to use the internet for English teaching: Authenticity, Literacy, Interaction,
Vitality and Empowerment.
