Terminology Practice

Bolt: a metal pin with threads, used to join two or more things .the spiral
ridge of a bolt is called a thread. A bolt has a nu which screws onto the
thread. Wouldn’t you have a stronger connection here if, you use a bolt?

Crescent: a type of curved truss. A crescent truss has a curved upper chord.
The crescent is a very attractive truss design. Does the roof of this hangar use
crescent trusses?

Fink: a truss with a complicated system of triangular members. The fink truss
is sometimes called a French truss. In my opinion. A fink truss would give you
the support you need. You could use several types of trusses. But wouldn’t
the fink be best here?

Joint: as use here, the intersection of two or more truss members. The
connection joints between the members of the truss are loose. Let’s use a
bolt at the joint for stability. Is the joint where these two chords connect
strong enough?

King post: a truss in which the vertical member connect the apex with the
base of the triangle.
The roof of the garage will have a king post truss. Is the king post simple
truss?
King post trusses are used as wood supports for simple roofs.

Panel point: the connection point between members of a truss. The

individual pieces of the truss intersect at the panel points. We have already
fastened the panel points. Is the stress on this panel point too great?

Purlin: a horizontal member that runs from truss to truss. We used purlins to
connect the trusses. Is a purlin a horizontal member?
A purlin is a member in a roof.

Rise: as use here. The distance between the highest point and the base of
the truss.
The rise is five feet.
Does this roof need a very high rise?
The actual rise doesn’t meet the specifications as shown in the diagram of
the truss.

Span: as used here, the distance between the centers of support of a

structure.
The distance between the centers of support is called the span. Will this
special construction allow a longer span?
The span shown on the blueprint is twice what we actually need.
