HTSB Standard 2: Learning differences – Rationale

As a teacher, understanding the individual differences and diverse backgrounds of my

students is imperative for enabling learners for growth to meet high standards. To satisfy
standard 2, the artifacts that I have chosen are: a) by the numbers assignment b) Peer-review
cards c) Quizizz online assessment results and d) language specific (Filipino) one-step equations
worksheet. Article ‘a’ is evidence of allowing my students to express themselves as differing
individuals with distinct personal and cultural backgrounds through mathematical formulas,
equations, and/or numbers. Each number/formula/equation related to algebra is a representation
of their talents, interests, perspectives, community, and personal life. This assignment allows my
student to share their personal traits with their peers so that they can identify with the classroom
to feel valued, and in return, value each other. Artifact ‘b’ is a picture of peer-review cards that I
implemented during my lesson regarding slopes and slope-intercept form in the form of groups.
These peer-review cards were designated to the melemele (yellow) group (students who felt
confident in the material, yet needed a little more practice to sharpen skills) to differentiate
learning allowing them to target their specific needs and take ownership of their learning.
Additionally, using Hawaiian language such as melemele, ‘ula’ula (red) and kula/gula (gold) to
represent the groups brings attention to Native Hawaiian language, culture, and community.
Artifact ‘c’ is an assessment result that was conducted using the online platform Quizizz which
address student’s diverse learning strengths and needs. As a result, not only does it target learner
preferences for students who enjoy working on the computer for growth but it also allows me to
make timely provisions to assess and aim to reach individual learner goals related to content
standards. Last but not least, evidence ‘d’ is a worksheet that I provided as a tool of language
development for one of my English learner students in his own language (Filipino) for content
accessibility, understanding, and to support his particular needs.
