DAILY LESSON LOG IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE

DATE: November 9, 2017

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain the type of nucleosynthesis that produced the elements heavier than iron;
2. Discuss the neutron and proton capture processes;
3. Infer that nuclei, stable or radioactive may be a product of s- ( slow), r-(rapid) or p-(proton)
processes;
II. CONTENT:
Topic: Nucleosynthesis: The Beginning of Elements
Subtopic: How elements heavier than iron are formed
Materials: Big bang Illustration, Physical Sciences by James T. Shipman,
https://www.quipper.com
III. ACTIVITY:
1. Identify the neutron and proton processes that formed the heavier elements
2. Classify as to s-,r-, or p-nucleus produced.

IV. ANALYSIS:
1. How did slow neutron capture process produce heavy elements?
2. How did rapid neutron capture process produce heavy elements?
V. ABSTRACTION:
Different pathways are needed for the synthesis of heavier elements and it happens via neutron
or proton capture processes. Slow neutron capture happens when there is a small number of
neutron and on the other hand, rapid neutron capture happens when there is a large number of
neutrons. Proton capture process is the addition of a proton in the nucleus.
VI. APPLICATION:
1. What is Coulombic repulsion in proton capture process?
2. What is supernova nucleosynthesis?
VII. ASSIGNMENT/ AGREEMENT:
Describe the ideas of the Ancient Greeks on the atom?
