The relief of Spain

1. What is relief?
It refers to all the variation in elevation of an area con the
Earth’s surface.

2. Which two types of relief can we find? Explain them.


- Inland relief: mountains and plains
- Coastal relief: land next to the sea.

3. Define:
- Mountains: high elevations of land.
- Plains: large extensions of flat land.
- Plateaus: high areas of flat land.
- River basins: low-laying plains drained by a river and its
tributaries.
- Cape: large piece of land that sticks out into the sea.
- Bay: body of water partially enclosed by land. Very big—>
gulf.
Very small —> cove.
- Peninsula: narrow piece of land surrounded by water on
three sides. The side with land is called isthmus.
- Mountain chain: a row of several mountains.

THE INNER PLATEAU


- It is a plain that covers the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
- It is 600 metres above the sea level.
- Three very important rivers cross it: Duero, Tajo and
Guadiana.
- There are different types of flat land on the Inner Plateau:
o On the edges —> high moorland —> Páramo Leonés
and Alcarria.
o Fertile flood plains next to the rivers.
o Low-lying fields in between.
- It covers the Autonomous Communities of Castilla-León,
Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and Extremadura.
