Indonesian minister calls on stay-at-home citizens to stop illegally streaming movies

Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate has urged people staying at home as per
government recommendation not to illegally stream movies online.

In a virtual press conference on Monday the minister said that illegally streaming movies could create
bandwidth saturation resulting in latency and performance issues in the country's overall internet
connection. The issues, he added, could hinder people who were working or studying from home.

"With all due respect, please stop streaming illegal movies," he said. "And for those who are using a
virtual private network [VPN), please control yourself and use online resources wisely."

He went on to say the country had recorded a significant rise in internet traffic since the government
urged citizens to stay at home in an effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. He did not specify
any figures, however.

Johnny added that since traffic was high and the bandwidth supply was limited, unnecessary online
activities could overload the system.

The ministry also said that as of Monday 305 items of false news or misinformation regarding COVID-19
had been detected circulating mostly on online media platforms and social media.
