Google Tour of World War II

For this assignment, you will follow a link to a Google Tour that I have created which
outlines the most important events of WWII. Please keep in mind that these locations
are shown in the present, so they look very different than they did in the 1940s. As you
follow the tour, you will have access to links of articles and videos, which should all help
you answer these questions as you go.

Answer each of the questions as you view the Google Tour.

1. The invasion of Poland is considered to be the beginning of World War II. Search
Google for at least two other dates/events that could also be argued as the
beginning of WWII, and explain why.

2. In your own words, explain the “blitzkrieg” tactic.

3. What was the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact? Why was Operation

Barbarossa significant to it?

4. Explain how the Battle of Stalingrad was fought and eventually won by the
Soviets.

5. Explain the nature of fighting during D-Day (the Allied Invasion of Normandy
Beach). How do you think it would have felt to be a soldier with that task?

6. At the Auschwitz location, use the Pegman to obtain a street view (this is located
directly under the zoom function). Spend some time exploring, and describe
below what you see.

7. Do a quick Google search for the sign at the entrance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau
camp. What does it mean, in English? Explain why this is significant to the
Holocaust and Hitler’s Final Solution.
8. What are the “4 D’s” that came out of the Potsdam Conference?

9. Follow the link to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Spend some time
reading through them. Then, pick out two of the rights listed, explain how they
were denied to people during WWII, and then explain why they are important
now.
