SaaaEaEEAEEEESNInEaSIRRRR RR Library Services UNIVERSITY March 18, 2020 Dr. Fiona Tothurst, Chair Department of Language & Literature Reed Hall Room 219 Dear Dr. Tolhurst, It is my pleasure to write this letter in support of Sheila Bolduc-Simpson’s work. As the First Year Experience Librarian, I support Composition instructors and their students; in that capacity, Sheila and I have had the opportunity to collaborate several times on assignments and class sessions over the past ceight years. This past academic year, we were awarded an Innovative Assignment Design Grant to modify an information literacy assignment in her Composition II course. Itis no surprise that Sheila and I would collaborate on an Innovative Assignment Design Grant. Shortly after I arrived at FGCU, she and I created an information literacy activity on generating keywords for her course that was successful and | still use to this day. And we've collaborated on several activities and Class sessions since. Sheila is one of the most engaging instructors I have observed in the classroom; she is continually using new and interesting techniques with her students to make lessons relevant to them, and she has introduced several new learning technologies and platforms to me. During Spring 2019, Sheila was a member of the Integrating Information Literacy Faculty Learning Community (FLC) that I offered through the Lucas Center. As a result of the FLC, Sheila had the idea of modifying a source evaluation activity in her Composition II course to focus on a specific piece of the Information Literacy Framework: Authority is Constructed and Contextual. While this assignment seemingly boiled down the five eriteria used in the original assignment to only focus on one, the important concepts were still represented—but they were placed in better context and required students to more critically think about them together. The redesigned assignment better engages students while improving their information literacy, which will help them throughout their college career and beyond. Sheila is an exemplary instructor and colleague who serves her students’ academic needs well and is an inspiration to work with on projects. Information literacy is an important concept for students to grasp, and itis instructors like Sheila who help make it successful. cerely, Least Lng Heather Snapp, MA, MLIS First Year Experience and Outreach Librarian cc: Dr. Chuck Lindsey, Interim Dean, College of Arts & Sciences (239) 590-7600 FAX: (239) 590-7609 10501 FGCU Boulevard South + Fort Myers, Florida 33965-6501 hetp:libraryfgcu.edu [An Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity Employer + A member ofthe Sate University System of Florida
