INTRODUCTION
As a music technology in education presenter and consultant, I’m always on the lookout for high quality, free
and low-cost resources for teachers, students and other musicians. In 2009, I ran my first “Music
Technology on a Shoestring” workshop at a conference in Melbourne, Australia, where I presented a
number of the resources featured in this guide. Over time, the list of resources grew, and I decided that it
was time to make a guide which I could easily share and update on an annual basis.

Please note that while most of the resources mentioned are completely free to use, some of them have
optional paid upgrades which unlock extra features, levels or services. I highly recommend upgrading to a
the extra features are always better, and in many cases, upgrading will
paid option if your budget allows —
simplify the way you share and assess student work.

Also, a few of the links in this guide are affiliate links which means I will receive a small commission if you
choose to use them to sign up for a paid product. It does not cost you any extra when using my link, and it
may buy me the occasional coffee here and there! :)

LESSON PLANS FOR THE RESOURCES IN THIS

GUIDE

I have chosen a handful of my favourite resources from this guide and created a series of lesson plans that
show you creative and practical ways you can use them in class with your students.

The lesson plan collection is called Super-Simple Music Tech Lessons Using Free Resources. Each one has a
downloadable lesson plan, plus a walkthrough video showing how it works. Some also have downloadable
printable and/or worksheets.

The good news is that you can access the ENTIRE collection of lesson plans inside my online community - the
Midnight Music Community. Unlimited access is available for as long as you are a member. If you are
already a member, log in to access the lessons.

Lessons are for Incredibox, Groove Pizza, Isle of Tune, Youtube, Beepbox, the Chrome Music Lab and more.

Join me and hundreds of other music teachers inside the Midnight Music Community for instant access

Clickable headings & related resources
Each resource listed in this guide has a “clickable” hyperlinked heading. Click on the link to go straight to the
website. If the link doesn’t work for you, simply type the resource name into Google to search for it.
Unfortunately, the website owners occasionally change the link without warning!

Where appropriate, I have also included links to further reading, other useful online articles, related lesson
plans or Music Tech Teacher podcast episodes.

Appropriate age ranges

I have indicated a “best for” age group for each resource. Please use your own judgement though! Many
resources are adaptable and may work perfectly fine with students outside the suggested age groups.
I have used the following guide:

● E = Elementary (K-6)
● M = Middle school (5-8)
● H = High school (7-12)

READING NOTES ON THE STAFF

RESOURCE  DESCRIPTION  E  M  H

Staff Wars

A space-themed game to help students learn the notes of the
staff. You can test treble, bass and alto clefs. There is also an
iPad app version available. Play it on individual devices or use it  ✓  ✓  ✓
with a single laptop plugged into a data projector. If you have
just a single computer, you can use the free score cards linked
below to engage all the students in your class.

Related: Printable score cards for Staff Wars - free download

Staff Wars 2 - The Music Interactive

Identify notes on the staff by playing a note on your instrument
(the sound is detected via your inbuilt laptop microphone, or
through an external mic plugged in to your computer). You can
select the level of difficulty and the range of notes (even just a
couple of notes - perfect for beginners). If your instrument is  ✓  ✓  ✓
not listed, you can choose one with the same clef, transposition
and range.

Tip: Scores are not saved permanently but you could ask
students to take a screenshot (also known as a screen capture
image) to “record” their score.

Related: Printable score cards for Staff Wars - free download

Krank and Lucy – The Music Interactive

Identify notes on the staff. You can select an instrument at the  ✓
beginning which will affect the clef and the range used.

Whack A Note

Whack a given note by clicking on it or by pressing the
corresponding number on the numeric keypad on your
computer.
    ✓
Tip: when you enter the “practice” screen at the beginning you
simply need to click on each number (or press the number on
your computer keyboard) to let the game know that everything
is working okay. Once you’ve done that, the game itself will
load (I found that confusing at first!)

Note Identification Trainer by Ricci Adams

Identify notes on the staff by selecting the answer at the  ✓  ✓
bottom. You can customise the exercise (ie. leave out some
notes) by using the Customise menu at the top right of the
screen. There are options to turn the timer and score on or
off.

Fretboard Note Identification Trainer by Ricci Adams    ✓  ✓

Identify notes on the fretboard by selecting the answer at the
bottom. You can customise the exercise (ie. leave out some
notes) by using the Customise menu at the top right of the
screen. There are options to turn the timer and score on or off.

Speed Note by Vic Firth

More advanced - good for older students. 10 levels, each with 3
speed options (rookie, pro, all-star). Lower levels use letter
names to identify notes while the upper levels use an on-screen  ✓  ✓
keyboard. Students need to take accidentals and key signature
into account. A small drawback - Speed Note plays a tone when
you identify notes (not the pitch of the note you just identified).
You can also download this game from The Music Interactive
website (use the Staff Wars link above).

Treble and Bass Clef Note Reading Games

A series of 4 games designed to reinforce the notes of the
treble and bass clefs. There are easy and advanced versions;  ✓  ✓
the advanced versions include ledger lines. All four games can
be found at the link above.

Flash Notation - Theta Music

Go to Games > Notation > Flash Notation. One of the
ear-training/literacy games from Theta Music. Click on the  ✓  ✓
letter name to identify a note. Most of the lower levels of each
game are free (when you set up a free account). Pay a
subscription to access higher levels.

Music Racer *NEW*

Race the clock to name notes of the staff, identify fingerings for
your instrument or define music terms.   ✓  ✓

CREATING LOOPS AND PATTERNS

RESOURCE  DESCRIPTION  E  M  H

Groove Pizza

Groove Pizza is an easy-to-use online drum machine which
uses a circular “pizza” interface to represent rhythmic patterns.
Alternatively, you can create a drum pattern by using the drum
grid underneath the “pizza”.

Groove Pizza is also useful for cross-curricular maths-music
lessons because it allows you to view rhythmic patterns as  ✓  ✓  ✓
shapes and angles. You can export drum patterns as WAV or
MIDI files and you can also send a pattern directly to the online
digital audio workstation Soundtrap (listed above). This is one
of my favourites!

Related: Lesson plans for Groove Pizza in the collection of
Super-Simple Music Tech Lesson Plans Using Free Websites
(includes Boom Snap Clap, Musical Dr. Seuss, Billie Jean Remix
& The Margherita Beat)
Tone Matrix

A simple, pentatonic-based step sequencer which allows you to
create repeating melodies. Use it as a composition starter (try  ✓  ✓  ✓
drawing your name!) or to show melody visually.

Monkey Machine

Create drum loops up to 32 beats in length. Variety of drum  ✓  ✓
kits to choose from. You can export your pattern as a MIDI file.

Audiotool

Create pattern-based music using hardware emulators.    ✓
Includes drum machines, synths, effects units and more. Drag
elements into place. Useful for teaching signal flow.

Beat Lab

Create drum loops with a variety of sounds using this simple
grid-style step sequencer. Click on the squares to turn them on
or off. Change tempo, genre and pattern length. You can use  ✓  ✓
Beatlab as is without logging in, but in order to save patterns,
you need to log in with a FaceBook account.

One Motion Drum Machine

Create drum patterns using online step-sequencer. Click on the  ✓  ✓
squares to turn sounds on/off. Has 3 demo patterns.

Papatap

You really need to try this out for yourself! Visit the site and
then press any key on your computer keyboard. Each key
triggers a percussive or melodic sound AND a visual to go with
it.   ✓  ✓  ✓

Press the spacebar to change the sound set (each one is
represented by a different coloured background). There are 6
sound sets in total. Good for exploring sound, experimenting
with rhythmic patterns and as a discussion starter for sampling.
Typatone

A new way of combining text and music. Click on the right side
of the screen and type something (your name perhaps?) Stop
typing and wait for your text to be played back to you.
✓  ✓  ✓

Could be used as composition starter activity: type a couple of
words or a short sentence and have students transcribe the
musical phrase, or record it in a sequencing program. Use that
musical phrase as the basis for a composition.
Typedrummer

Click in the box and type something: a word, a sentence or just
a string of random letters. Your text will be “played” back to
you with a series of rhythmic sounds.
  ✓  ✓  ✓
Students could collaboratively “decode” the alphabet: identify
which letters make the sounds of a bass drum, snare drum, hi
hat and so on. Students could then work out how to create a
basic rock pattern: which letters are needed? In which order do
they need to be written to create the drum pattern?
Seaquence

Seaquence is… unusual! The website describes it as “an
experiment in musical composition. Adopting a biological  ✓  ✓
metaphor, you can create and combine musical lifeforms
resulting in an organic, dynamic composition.” Experiment for
yourself to see what it’s all about.

Turca or Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony play in a graphic
notation piano roll format. You can change the playback  ✓  ✓  ✓
sounds and also record an audio sample to be used as the
playback sound (try barking like a dog - very funny!). Note that
the record function does not work on iPads (but the other
sounds do).
Spectogram (Chrome Music Lab)

A spectrogram is a sound picture and allows you to see the
frequencies that make up sound. The effect is quite beautiful.
Test the different sound options at the bottom of the screen.
✓  ✓  ✓

  Kandinsky (Chrome Music Lab)

Inspired by the artist Kandinsky who compared painting to
making music. Draw lines, squiggles or pictures on the screen
with your finger or mouse and your picture will turn into sound.
✓  ✓
Press play to hear your picture as a looped piece.
