The expected life of a rail subjected to random, variable amplitude track cycles, is highly dependent on
damage accumulation caused by a fluctuating stresses resulting from the passage of train over the rail. Finite
element mathematical model is developed to study the dynamic response of vehicle – track coupling system. The
track is modeled as a finite length Euler Bernoulli beam discretely supported at rail sleeper junctions by a series of
rail pad, ballast, subgrade respectively. Shear springs and dampers are introduced between the ballast masses to
model shear coupling effects in the ballast. By using the standard S-N curve approach and also other methods are
used to predict the fatigue life of rail and the inspection interval of rail.
Term Projects:
Development of Response Spectrum February, 2015
Dr. Hemant B. Kaushik
Using the strong motion recorded during 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, developed a MATLAB code to find
the Spectral Displacement Response spectrum, Pseudo- Spectral velocity Response spectrum, Pseudo- Spectral
acceleration Response spectrum by considering damping of 2%, 5% and 10%, using Newmark-Beta numerical
integration method.
Dynamic analysis of Beam October, 2014
Prof. Anjan Dutta
Developed MATLAB codes for finding the response of a simply supported beam subjected to dynamic point
load (or loads) by using modal superposition method and finite element method. The results of the finite element
method are found satisfactory when compared with standard result.
