International House Certificate in Teaching 1-2-1 (IH 1-2-1)

Course length: 12 weeks plus 2 weeks


Delivery format: online (asynchronous) portfolio collation

Weekly hours: approx. 5 - 7 hours plus time

Course objectives
The main aim of this course is to prepare teachers for working in a 1-2-1 teaching context.

The course aims to give you a solid grasp of the main issues and techniques involved in
teaching 1-2-1 whatever your context e.g. General English in school, General or Business
English with executives in company, Home Tuition, etc.

Course content
The IH 1-2-1 course is divided into 11 modules, which are a mixture of input, reflection on
experience and discussion. Each module has a set of pre-module reading and tasks along
with weekly tasks. One module is covered each week and there is a two week period at the
end in which to complete the assessed portfolio. The modules focus on the following areas:

 Motivation and learning  Materials


 The role of the teacher and learner  Technology
 The impact of culture  Written Reformulation
 Needs Analysis and profiling the student  Spoken Reformulation
 Lesson planning and planning a series of  Teaching YL
lessons

Mode of assessment
 Assessed portfolio tasks
 Final assignment (a course plan for a 1-2-1 course).
Your portfolio is submitted within 2 weeks of the course closure date to the IHWO
Assessment Unit who agree the final grades with the course tutors. The grading of the
course is Pass or Fail

Is this course for you?


It is suitable for teachers who have just completed the CELTA and for General English
teachers who need further training for teaching 1-2-1.

Location
The course is run online and requires regular/daily access to the internet with a good
connection.
Tutors
The course is run by qualified online tutors who will guide trainees through the online
sessions and assess the portfolio.

Time commitment
The course is paced at one module per week plus 2 weeks for portfolio collation. It is
expected that you will spend a minimum of 5 hours a week studying with extra time for the
pre-module reading and final assignment.
