For years, scientists worked to put some order into creating a lst of chemical elements according to their
state at room temperature. In 1817, J.W. Dobereiner recognized a link between the weights and chemical
properties of groups of elements. Since the elements appeared to form groups of three, he named the
‘groups ‘triads’ The name ‘triad’ could not last since other elements soon proved they too belonged in the
litle sets
‘Almost fifty years later, J.R. Newlands assembled the elements in groups of seven. He named the groups
‘octaves, after the musical term describing melodies where every seven notes are repeated. But it was in 1869
that the Periodic Table as we know it was almost completed. Dmitri Mendeleev presented his Periodic
Law, stating that, when elements are grouped according to thelr atomic welght, patterns were found. This
allowed scientists to make accurate predictions about elements in each group. The Law worked for most
‘elements, but problems still remained.
“The modern Periodic Table arose from the work of H. Mosley, who realized that, by arranging the Table
‘according to atomic numbe> (based on the number of protons in a nucleus) and not by weight, all the
‘elements, including the problem ones, ft into place. Only hydrogen could not be easily categorised. This is
pecause it behaved 50 differently to the other elements, Having only one electron, hydrogen can easly lose
this to become a positively charged ion, or gain an electron to obtain a stable, full electron configuration.
For this reason, hydrogen can be found with either the alkali metals or the halogens on a Periodic Table.

132 ‘The modem Periodic Table originally arranged elements according to weight.
138 Mosley grouped elements according to atomic weight.
134 ‘The modern Periodic Table arranges elements according to atomic number.
135 Hydrogen behaves no differently from other elements of similar weights,
136 Atomic number is based on the number of protons in the nucleus.
157 The Periodic Law states that when grouped according to weight,
‘no predictions can be made about other elements, Pe
