3. Fees at UAS Technikum Wien5
Tuition Fees: Two weeks before the beginning of each semester (new students: up to August 20 before
taking up studies) the student is required to pay tuition fees according to the University of Applied Sciences
Studies Act (Federal Law Gazette No 340/1993 as amended) currently to the sum of € 363.36 net payable
per semester. This also applies in semesters with graduand status etc. In the event of an increase in the
legal tuition fees rate, the amount quoted will increase accordingly. For non-commencement or termination of
the study at the beginning or during the semester, the tuition fee is forfeited.
Student Fee (“Austrian Student Union fee”): According to § 4 section 9 of the Universities of Applied
Sciences Studies Act (Federal Law Gazette No 340/1993 as amended and the Federal Ministries Act - 2007
amendment, Federal Law Gazette I No. 6/2007), students at universities of applied sciences degree
programs are members of the Austrian Students Union in accordance with the Students Act (HSG
1998).This results in the student being obliged to pay the Austrian Student Union fee. This also applies in
semesters with graduand status. The student fee can be annually indexed by the Austrian Students'
Union; the exact amount of the student fee for the following year is announced annually by the Austrian
Students' Union.
The amount is levied by the University of Applied Sciences. The operator then transfers the amounts paid by
the students without deductions to the Students' Union. Payment of the student fee is a pre-requisite for
admission to the course or for its continuation.
Deposit: During the process of registration, proof of deposit paid must be provided.
The deposit is € 150.
For non-commencement of studies or termination during the first or second semester, the deposit shall be
forfeited.
If, by the beginning of the second semester, registration has been completed correctly the deposit will be
credited to the contribution towards expenses (see next point) for the first and second semester.
Contribution towards Expenses: A contribution towards expenses, which is not a lump sum, is payable per
semester. The contribution towards expenses represents compensation for the services provided by the
UAS that go beyond the normal level, such as electives, counseling / information about studying abroad,
graduation ceremonies, lectures / job market, cafeteria, etc.
The amount of the contribution is currently € 75, - per semester. Any possible adjustment is posted on the
noticeboard.
In / from the 3rd semester the contribution towards expenses must be paid together with the tuition fees
before the start of the semester.
If the contract is cancelled before graduation for reasons that are the fault of the student, or on their wishes,
the contribution towards expenses shall be deducted to cover the additional administrative costs borne by
the operator.
Teaching Aids and Learning Tools: The acquisition of teaching-related literature and individual learning
tools is not covered by the contribution towards expenses. Any additional costs, which arise for example
from the course-related, joint purchase of teaching and / or learning materials (scripts, CDs, books, project
materials, copying paper, etc.) or result from field trips, are levied by each individual degree program.

4. Scholarships/Grants
UAS Technikum Wien does not provide any scholarships or grants.
However, international students can apply in their home country for a scholarship offered by the Austrian
Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research (OeAD):
http://www.oead.at/welcome_to_austria/grants_scholarships/EN/
We also recommend checking the scholarship database of the OeAD:
www.grants.at

5. Legalization and Translation of

Documents
Foreign secondary and/or tertiary qualifications give the same evidential value as domestic documents only if
they are either exempt from legalization or have passed the necessary legalization procedure. Please see
the following websites for detailed information:

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research

NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) AUSTRIA

http://www.bmwf.gv.at/home/academic_mobility/enic_naric_austria/

Also, foreign secondary and/or tertiary qualifications which are neither issued in German nor English have to
be translated into either German or English by a certified translator.

6. Visa and Residence Permits

OeAD provides detailed information concerning visa and residence permits. We highly recommend reading
http://www.oead.at/welcome_to_austria/EN/
For further information on your visa application, please also contact the Austrian representation in your home
country. Please allow sufficient time for visa processing!

7. Appendix
Apart from studying, we’d like to provide you with further information about other formal aspects of daily life
in Austria.

7.1. Financial Information

All students must be able to cover personal living expenses, the tuition fees, costs of study materials,
insurance, etc.. The following average monthly living costs have to be taken into account
6
(source:http://www.oead.at/welcome_to_austria/legal_practical_issues/life_in_austria/EN/) :
Accommodation € 310,-
Meals € 220,-
Miscellaneous (e.g. study material, transportation, telephone, etc.) € 270,-
TOTAL € 800,-

The actual monthly expenses in Vienna can be higher than shown above. Please note that you may incur
considerable extra costs at the beginning of your studies, such as fees for residence permit, a deposit fee for
the accommodation, public transport, etc.

7.2. Health Insurance

OeAD lists detailed information on the possibilities of health insurance (either National Health Insurance or
Private Health Insurance): http://www.oead.at/welcome_to_austria/legal_practical_issues/insurance/EN/.

OeAD offers a lot more information about living in Austria, including the possibilities of working for
international students.

7.3. The Vienna Public Transport System
Arrival by Airplane
Vienna International Airport is situated about 15 kilometers east of the city centre. The most economical way
to go from the airport to the city centre is to use line S7 to “Wien Mitte”
(http://www.viennaairport.com/jart/prj3/va/main.jart?rel=en&content-id=1260752528082). Another,
faster but more expensive option is CAT, a rapid transit train that also takes you to “Wien Mitte”. For fees,
see www.cityairporttrain.com. From “Wien Mitte” you can continue your journey by various public means of
transport such as underground, tram or bus.
Public Transport
To travel in Vienna by underground, bus or tram, please check:

Trains
For travelling by train in Austria see: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp.

7.4. Accommodation
UAS Technikum Wien does not provide any accommodation for students, but there are various options for
you depending on your individual needs and life style:
 Student hostels/dormitories: In general, we recommend to apply for it early enough (about 6 months
before.) Non-Austrian students can choose among the whole range of student hostels in Vienna. Some of
those cater to the needs of non-Austrian students more than others: e.g. the student hostel of the Afro-
Asian Institute offers accommodation in 64 single and 4 double rooms throughout the year and offers
prayer rooms for various denominations, see: http://www.aai-wien.at/. The (OeAD) also helps non-
Austrian students find suitable and affordable accommodation with its housing service at
www.housing.oead.ac.at/wien_e/unterkunft.asp?keyword=wien. You can also choose among the other
student hostels in Vienna. Lists of all the hostels with detailed descriptions of furniture, rent and
application formalities is available at www.studentenfoerderung.at, www.studieren.at and www.cycamp.at.
 Sharing: A very common alternative to living in a student hostel is sharing a flat/apartment with other
students. These are the websites where you can search for a suitable place: www.wohnenboerse.at,
www.jobwohnen.at, www.wgzimmer.at (available in English and other languages)
 Renting a flat/apartment: Before signing a rental agreement, it is advisable to gather information about
your rights and duties and to have the agreement checked by an expert. This way you sometimes can
achieve a reduction (e.g. in case of a time limit in the contract the legal maximum rent has to be reduced
by 25%). Looking for a flat can be time-consuming and should be well planned. If you commission an
agent with the search you have to pay commission (usually several monthly rents) for this service. Take
into account that deposits might have to be paid as well as payments for previous investments.

The Housing Office of the OeADprovides flats and rooms in halls of residence for students receiving OeAD
grants, Erasmus students, visiting professors and guests. Should you wish to have a room at a student
residence procured, you have to remit a deposit.

8
On receipt of the completed application form, you will be informed about the address and location of your
student residence. After leaving the student residence, the deposit will be refunded.
