To whom it may concern:

I learned of the Graduate Nurse Residency Program while working as a Nurse Extern in the
Emergency Department. Several of the nurses who completed the program spoke highly of the
opportunity, explaining how beneficial it was to have the extra support in the first few months
working as a nurse.

I am currently in my final semester of nursing school at Jackson College and am quite excited to
graduate and become a nurse. I am a former elementary and middle school teacher and many
of the skills developed in my previous career translate to nursing. I have taught students of
different ethnicities, socioeconomic levels, and mental health levels. My comfort and ability to
communicate with people of various backgrounds is beneficial in assisting my team members in
providing exceptional care to patients.

I can’t explain how valuable the last six months working as a Nurse Extern have been. I’ve
become competent starting IVs, performing EKGs, inserting NG and OG tubes, performing
bladder scans, inserting straight urinary catheters, documenting using EPIC, and implementing
a variety of other skills performed by an ED TCA. I have absolutely loved my job -- honestly,
more than any other job in my past. My coworkers are always willing to educate and assist me,
and I am extremely comfortable in the team setting of the Emergency Department. I can’t wait to
be a nurse, whether that is in the Emergency Department or another department in the hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application. The Graduate Nurse Residency Program
is an excellent opportunity and introduction into nursing. I hope I am considered for a position. I
can be reached at the cell phone number or email below, and look forward to speaking with you.
Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Zak Schaefer
