Welcome + Who We Are
Welcome to the Sustainability Institute! We are so excited to have you here with us today. We
have a day full of activities and discussions, all focused on the theme of collaboration within
sustainability. Throughout the day, we will learn how to leverage our strengths in collaborative
work to address complex issues in sustainability, both within and outside of our communities.
About Us:
Florida State University's Sustainable Campus works to educate and engage students, staff,
and faculty to set an example of campus sustainability and position FSU as a leader of
environmental and social action. Our educational efforts, community outreach, and programs
work alongside the greater campus efforts and operations to provide everyone with the ability to
develop, apply, and practice sustainability. Our efforts seek to conserve resources at FSU and
strengthen the positive impact our university leaves upon the local and global environment for
generations to come.
What We Do:
● Climate Action by reducing the campus footprint through conservation, sustainable
transportation, greenhouse gas reduction, and green building
● Waste Minimization by enhancing reduction, reuse, and recycling efforts
● Resource Stewardship by expanding conservation on campus, through
environmentally friendly land, habitat, and watershed management practices
● Education for sustainability by increasing outreach to the campus community through
curricular and co-curricular activities

Sustainability Institute Learning Contract
The purpose of this learning contract is to establish ground rules to ensure a healthy
shared space and sense of community for all participants and facilitators throughout the
day. Below are ground rules we will commit to for the day.
1. Step Up, Step Back - Share your thoughts, but be cognizant of other voices and
do not dominate the conversation. Give others the space to speak as well.
2. Vegas Rule - What’s shared in the space stays in the space. What’s learned in
the space, leaves the space.
3. Fall in love with the problem, not the solution - Focus efforts on learning the root
cause of an issue and collaborating with others to find multiple solutions. Even if
you find a solution, stay open to new ideas and strategies that others may have
to contribute.
4. Listen for understanding - Seek first to understand, rather than challenge or
persuade.
5. Critique ideas, not people - Effective collaboration sometimes requires critique
and disagreement of others ideas. It doesn’t, however, require critiquing people.
The critiquing of ideas should be focused on the idea, not the person that
suggested it.
6. Judgement free zone - Understanding that we are all in different places on our
sustainability journeys, commit to a space of grace and education, rather than
judgement.
With this signature, I am agreeing to uphold all parts of the Sustainability Institute
Learning Contract.

The Big Picture
The goal of this activity is to begin the process of thinking about how your actions (ex. Goals,
organizations, leadership) are connected to the bigger picture and the world beyond your
current reality.
Consider the communities you are a part of. What are important issues facing these
communities? What are people advocating for around the globe that mirror these issues? What
has been accomplished?
How can you and those within your sphere of influence work to combat these issues and enact
sustainable change?
Who is being left out of the conversation and why? Who might you not be collaborating with that
is a key stakeholder as well?
19
The Ultimate Challenge
● What issue in the state of Florida can you identify with the words drawn?
● What is the root cause of that issue?
● How did that issue come to be?
● Who does this issue impact?
● Who was left out in any decision making leading up to the issue?
● Who are key stakeholders in the issue? How about the solution?
● What is an equitable solution to your issue? Does one exist?
● How did you work collaboratively throughout this challenge?
● What is your big takeaway from this activity (or today)?
