Read the owner's manual carefully. Learn how to stop the engine quickly in an emergency. Make sure the lawn is clear of sticks, stones, bones, wire and debris. They could be thrown by the blade. ‘Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire before checking or working on the mower. Before using, always visually inspact to see that ‘the cutter assembly is not worn or damaged. Replace worn or damaged cutter and fixing to preserve balance. Damaged bledes and worn bolts are major hazards. Check all nuts, bolts and screws often. ‘Always be sure the mower is in safe operating ‘condition. Use only replacoment parts made and ‘guaranteed by the original manufacturer of your mower, Add fuel before starting the engine. Avoid spilling petrol and do not fill the tank whilst the engine is running or while you are smoking. Do not mow whilst people or pets are in the mowing area. Children under 16 years may not use the mower. Never use the mower unless the grasscatcher or guards provided by the manufacturer are in position. Do not mow barefoot or in open sandals. Start the engine carefully with feet well away from the blades, Do not operate the engine in a confined space where exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide) can collect, Stop the engine whenever you leave the mower. Stop the engine before pushing the mower across surfaces other than grass. Do not allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the mower. On slopes or wet grass, be extra careful of your footing Never cut grass by pulling the mower towards you, Do not overspeed the engine or alter governor settings. Excessive speed is dangerous and shortens mower life. Store fuel in a coo! place in a container ‘specifically designed for the purpose. In general, plastic containers are unsuitable. Never pick up or carry a mower when itis operating, Never use the machine if itis not in proper working order. Disengage all blade and drive clutches before starting, WARNING! BLADES CONTINUE TO ROTATE eee MACHINE IS SWITCHED FF Description General {Your Mountfield Mirage Is a dual purpose Graseeuiter designed forcutting ether long gras: Stmowing atawn The cutters rotary and ie driven by an alrcooled engine, The engine also drives a propelling mechariemwhich consists! a rarermisslon unt suspended across the reac themachine, giving drive tothe rear wheels. Tht Unit esa molt-plte clutch suspended in an ol bath end ully enclosed to exclude dust and rata lubricant giving positive drive tothe rear wheels, Engine and clutch controls are conveniontly positioned on the handle. (See under Controls fo Betated instructions. ‘The height of cut is adjusted by a lever and ‘quadrant on the rear right hand wheel. (For detailed instructions see under Mowing). ‘The grass outlet at the rear of the machine discharges into a grass collector. Removal of the grass collector allows defiector to drop down to close the outlet. Assembly Instructions Unpack the machine from the carton. Position handles on the machine as shown on the ‘assembly illustration, The height of the handles may beadjusted to sult individuals by slackening huts on each side of the machine and retightening with the handles atthe chosen height. PY D> Lark 7 Fig. Assemble the grasscatcher as shown on the illustration on the package. The grass catcher attaches to the machine as shown opposite. 2 Fig.2 Controls Control of the engine is by means of the lever on the handle. The lever controls the engine speed from idling through to maximum, applies choke for cold starting when moved fully to ‘Choke’ position and finally, earths the ignition to stop fhe engine when moved fully to the “Stop” position. [iol se ||| |=. Slow | (isi Chote i : é Fig Control of the drive to the rear wheels is by ‘means of a bar extending across the width of the handle. The drive is engaged by pushing the bar towards the handle. Releasing the bar disengages the drive. The ber may be operated from any position across the width of the handle. (Particular attention should be given to adjustment of the clutch cable—see under Clutch Adjustment). Working Principle ‘The cutter, revolving at high speed, performs two jobs. The cutting edges cut the grass and the curved ends of the cutter act like a fan, causing a suction of air below the casing, blowing the air through the outlet at the back. ‘The high speed air stream carries the grass cuttings out of the casing, either into the grass collector, or downwards by the deflector plate on tothe ground. ‘The height of the casing above the ground is adjusted by the lever on the right hand rear wheel. The quadrant has 7 notches giving height of cut setting between 2 centimetres and 7 centimetres. Safety precautions Itis important to read and understand the safety instructions. The rotary cutteris the main hazard. Remember that at all times when the engine is running, the cutteris revolving within the casing. ‘The cutter is fully enclosed and only accessible from underneath or through the rear opening. NEVER therefore place your hands or any implement underneath or into the casing while the engine is running. If you have a blockage of grasscuttings, or, for any reason, itis necessary to approach the cutter, stop the engine by movingthe control to STOP andlleave the control at STOP, which earths the ignition and avoids any riskofthe engine firing ifthe cutters moved. ‘Afurther precaution which should be t before rotating the cutter is to remove leadfromthe sparking plug. tis simple push fit. The machine should never be used unless the {grass collector is fitted or the deflector is in the down position, The danger is from herd objects which may be picked up by the cutter and ejected towards the operator, or bystanders. 4 ‘The engine is stopped, as previously instructed, by moving the control iever tothe STOP position which earths the ignition, The cutter continues to rotate after the machine is switched off until the engine is stationary. A warning to this effect is fitted to the machine. Engine Operation and Maintenance With this manual, you should find printed instructions supplied by the makers of the engine ‘on engine operation and maintenance. These should be studied bofore putting the machine to work. Operation Before first use Check the following points: ‘The engine has been filled with The cutter is securely fastened. Before cutting grass Check the following points: (a) Inside of casing clean — not clogged with ‘grass pulp or mud build up (b) Cutter in good condition. Cutter securing bolt in good condition. A worn cutter could ruin the engine. (See section on Replacement and Resharpening of Cutters). fin doubt contact your Mountfield dealer. (c) Engine checked and filled with petro! (d) Height of cut set higher than low position, when cutter might strike uneven ground. (e) Grass collector or deflector plate in position. Mowing Starting Engine Itis easierto startthe engine ifthe machine ison ‘a path or hard ground (free from loose stones) When there will not be a drag of the grass on th ‘cutter. Ifthe machine is moved on to long gras before starting, the drag of the grasson thecutter, will make starting very difficult. Refer to Engine Manufacturer's Operating Manual for detailed instructions. Height of Cut Adjustment ‘The heightadjustment raises or lowers the whole machine and serves two purposes. Firstly, it regulates the cldseness of the cutter to the ground and thus the shortness of the cut grass. Secondly, it controls the flow of air through the ‘casing which carries the grasscuttings into the grass collector, The higher the machine is raised from the ground, the greater the airflow. Choking of the grass outlet is an indication that the airflow is insufficient and when this occurs, the machine should be raised until choking is ] Fig. Lawn Mowing When using the machine for the first time on @ well-kept and regularly cut lawn, start cutting with the adjustment higher than required and gradually lower it until a satisfactory cutis Obtained without shaving bare any high spots in the lawn surface. If setting the adjustment with the machine standing on @ hard surface, remember that the wheels will sinkinto the grass and appreciably lower the cutting height. Run the engine sufficiently fastto give an airflow which carries the cuttings to the back of the collector. ‘The catcher when full holds a large quantity of grass and can be too heavy for comfortable carrying. When first starting to mow, frequently check the amount of grass in the catcher; empty before it becomes completely full or too heavy. ‘Assess the area of grass cut so that emptying can thon be made regularly without frequent checking of the load or overfilling the catcher, o¢ empty after 4 or 6 rows. Guidance on Mowing Procedure The illustration below shows how the edges of « lawn can be cut to allow a convenient space for turning at the end of each row. This procedure can be adapted to accommodate different garden layouts. Grass Cutting—Overgrown lawns, wet or thie! heavy grass. Inthese conditions, itis essential to settheheig! adjustment in accordance with the airflow requirements, rather than the cutting height. Whilst the engine is powerful enough to cut a heavy crop to lawn finish in one cut, the airflov will probably be quite inadequate to carry the heavy volume of grass cuttings intothe collecte Also, itis better for an overgrown lawn to be c: down in easy stages, Therefore, set the height adjustment to cut say half the ‘crop’, run the ‘engine at full speed and check that the airflow is adequate to carry the grass cuttings into the collector. Ifchoking ofthe grass outlet does take place, stop, the engine, clear the outlet, raise the height of cut one notch and test again. Grass cuttings may also be allowed to blow out ‘onto the ground. When dry, they may be picked up by running the machine over the ground with the collector fitted, Wet grass Ifthe grass iswet snd sticky, a gradual build-up of pulp may occur inside the edges of the casing ‘Stop the engine and clear this build-up with a stick or old knife, if it becomes excessive. Remember the Safety Instructions. Long grass on uneven ground Your Mountfield Mirage will cut and clear really long grass over uneven ground. Set the height of cut to maximum and work the machine at full throttle. Use the machine with the grass deflector in place. Allow cuttings to blow out on the ground, behind the machine. Cheok thatthe groundis free from stumps, bricks or stakes hidden by long grass. Donot attempt to cut over the top of any obstruction of this nature; sooner or later serious damage to the machine will result from the revolving cutter striking a solid object. (On completion of rough grass cutting, check that the cutter has not been damaged by stones. The cutter must be in good shape for a fine lawn finish, (See section on Cutter sharpening.) Cutting to Walls, Hedges, etc. Driving close along a wall or fence is safe and practicable and will give a neat finish. Stoping Ground Do not use machines fitted with 4-stroke engines on slopes steeper than 30”. Failure to observe this instruction will cause a breakdown of the lubrication system and will result in serious damage to the engine. Stones Any contact with stones will damage the cutter ‘and may upset the airflow shape of the cutter. Examine the cutter regularly and re-sharpen or replace with a new cutter if damage has ‘occurred. (See Cutter Changing section.) Finishing Off and Storage Having achieved a nice ‘banded’ finish to your lawn, you can now store your Mountfield mower until next required. Before putting it way, a few moments’ attention will pay handsomely. Grass cuttings and ‘pulp’, if allowed to dry, stick firmly to the inside of the casing and a build-up willinterferewith the performance nexttime you wish to cut the grass For access to the inside of the casing, adopt the following procedure: ‘Tecnamotor - Turn the machine so that the carburettor is uppermost and clean out the ‘casing with a piece of wood or a knife. Som« Teakage of petrol through the vent in the fuel tank cap may occur ifthe tankisfull. The cutter may be ‘hacked at the same time. Briggs & Stratton — Close fuel shut off valve, ensure carburettor is dry by allowing engine to fun. Turn machine so that the muffler is Uppermost or tilt machine backwards so that spark plug is uppermost, then clean casing with 2 piece of wood or knife. Ensure that when the machine is tipped on its side that the blade is not rotated. Maintenance Replacement and Resharpening of Cutters retained by a central hexagon headed bolt and large washer. Before working on it, move the throttie control to STOP and remove the plug lead. Remove the bolt and remove the cutter from its spigot. Purchase a new Mountfield cutter for your machine. Use only genuine Mountfield cutters. Refit the cutter to its spigot and replace the thick washer and centre bolt and tighten to:30-35 Ib. ft. (40-47 Nm} Fig.6 Aslightly worn cutter may be sharpened by filing. Maintain the same angle as the original cutter'and ensure the cutter is balanced. If not balanced, grind metal from the heavy end. Maximum acceptable out of balance effect is 1.5, ‘gm at cutter tip. Fig.7 fa alanceris not available, removethe same | amount of metal from each end. If the machine vibrates after refitting, replace with a new Mountfield cutter or referto your Mountfield jealer. Battery maintenance To achieve optimum performance from the battery of electric start models we recommend ‘you observe the following points: 10 During normal mowing the battery will be maintained at a high level of charge. If the machines used for mowing for less than about minutes between starts the battery will not maintain such a high level of energy and more frequent uso of tho auxiliary charger will be necessary. When purchased we advise charging for 48 hours. Use only battery charging unit provided with the mower. Supply should be to a suitable 240V 80Hz source. To charge the battery the following procedure should be adopted: Disconnect battery lead from wiring loom (see diagram). Connect similar terminal on battery charging unit to leads on battery. The charger may be connected to the battery either in position on the mower or removed to amore convenient location. When in seasonal use, charge overnight once per, month. (More frequently if heavily used). Charge battery for 48 hours before and after winter storage. ‘The life of the battery will be greatly reduced if the cutter cannot rotate freely when starting the ‘engine. Do not allow lang or uncut grass to drag on the cutter when starting. Do not allow excessive build-up of pulp inside the ‘casing—this can also drag on the cutter. See section on ‘Wet Grass’ Replacement of parts If parts need replacement, use only Mountfield parts which you can obtain from your dealer. Clutch Cable Setting The gearbox fitted to this self-propelled grasscutter has an exclusive multi-plate oil bath clutch which has a very soft drive engagement. Everything works well provided the load on the clutch is correct. The load is controlled through spring A atthe upper end of cable B, connecting the gearbox G (inside the lawnmower) to the clutch lever mounted on the upper end of the. lawnmower handle. To check and correct tension on the spring, the following sequence should be followed: 1. Check the length (L) of the spring A when the clutch lever is in disengaged position. 2 Push the clutch control lever towards the handle into engaged position and check the length (L} of spring A. When (L1 minusLo) ‘10mm +, 1mm the spring tension is correct. 2 IF(L1 minusLo) is lower or higher than 10mm. + Imm, the spring tension must be corrected as follows: 3.1. Prevent rotation of cable B through hexagon C. 3.2 Loosen and rotate nuts D and E until L1 minus LO is 10mm, 1mm. 3.3 Retighten bolts D and E to bracket F in ‘order to make sure the spring tension ‘cannot alter while in operation. sche LL cee i ee fe — le ~ + @ baa EE alae ? Gearbox Lubrication Itis important thatthe oil level inthe geerboxis checked every 25 hours of use. To ensure the correct level is in the box adopt 2 the following procedure: 1. Place machine on a flat level surface. 2, Remove the plug. 4. Fill with oil until oll flows out of box. 4, Rofit the plug, The lubricant to be used is Shell Tellus 722. Please ask your dealer for the correct oil Simple Fault Finding 1. Check ample petrol in tank. 2 Check throttle control in full choke position. 3. Check cutter not fouling ground and preventing free rotation. Engine will not Stop. 1. Check throttle control fully to stop. 2. Remove plug lead. Failure to Cut Grass Properly 1. Switch off engine. 2 Check cutter bolt tight. 3. Check condition of cutter blade. If seriously damaged, replace with new. re to Collect Grass Properly 1 Switch off engine. 2. Check for build-up of grass pulp inside casing 3 Check grassbag is allowing air though fabric. If not, bag may need washing to clean, 4 Ifaboveall OX. raise heightof cut adjustment to increase airflow. 5 Check engine running at proper speed. (Approximately 3000 rpm). 6 If conditions are too severe for use of grass collector, work with grass deflector plate. Machine Vibrates Excessively This almost certainly indicates that the cutter has hit something really solid and has been badly damaged. Stop the engine and check the cutter assembly. Difficulties experienced with the operation of your machine can be most quickly solved by Consultation with your nearest Mountfield dealer. Overheating Check that the cooling airflow over the cylinder head is not blocked by a build-up of grass cuttings between the cylinder fins and the ‘cowling. In some conditions, regular attention to this point may be necessary. Your Dealer will advise, if required. THE MOUNTFIELD GUARANTEE G.D.
