In thinking about how to best meet the needs of students,

I think about areas of strength, taking an asset based

approach, and use that as a lens for moving forward.

One of my students was struggling to identify letters. He is

most engaged when doing tactile and hands-on activities.
Taking an asset-based approach, and working with the
IST team, I have been better able to meet that students’
needs by having him form letters in salt, rather than in the
air with his finger or on paper. He has responded very
positively to this approach and actively participates in a
way he didn’t before.

Created differentiated “Gotcha” games with words on

students’ reading level, in order to foster blending skills.
One of my students is practicing social skills at school
(sitting in his seat, raising his hand before speaking), He
is able to track his progress and feel motivated to practice
these behaviors by using his sticker chart.

I noticed several of my students were not

identifying as readers. They would say “I don’t
know how to read”. In one of my reading groups,
we wear “reading glasses” to help get in the
mindset that we are readers.
Color coding: Students color code parts of
speech (nouns-purple, verbs-orange) to
help them work on building their writing
from the word level to the sentence level.
