Vastu Shastra New Concept In Architecture

Abstract
Vastu, the word denotes anything existing, such as house, shelter, building etc. shastra in
Sanskrit is an ancient art and science containing certain principles and practices. The report
commences with and insight into the traditional understanding of Vastu with its majestic and
yet unrecognized history. The concept of Vastu Purusa and Vastu chakram has been also
looked into. A sincere effort has been made to unravel the deep knowledge lying behind the
understanding of energy field.

Storeyed Building. The Houses Were Of
Thatched House And The Beams Are
Made Of Timber Or Bamboo Placed In
Proper Position By Means Of Screws And
Nails. During Earthquake The Beam May
Fall Down And May Make Serious Injury
To The Person Lying Below The Beam

Therefore, It Is Prohibited To Sleep Below
The Beam Of A Roof. But In The Recent
Construction Building Is Made With
R.C.C. Framed Structure In Which Beam
Is Also A Major Part Of The Frame. The
Beam Makes The Building To Keep The
Structure In Proper Position. Therefore,
Sleeping Below The Beam Is Justified In
The Recent R.C.C. Building As It Is A
Safe Position Because Of Its Strength And
Durability. Therefore, Now A Days The
Vaastu Concept Of Not To Sleep Below
The Beam Of Roof Is Not Justified As It Is
Safe Place Because Of Its Structural
Strength And Durability.

Bearing Capacity
The Bearing Capacity Of Soil Depends
Upon The Physical Characteristics Of The
Soil Particles (In Size, Shape, Cohesive
Properties, Frictional Resistance And The
Power To Retain Moisture Etc.), Moisture
Content And The Changes Brought In By
The Atmospheric Influences (Heat, Rain
Etc).
In General The Heavier The Unit Wt. Of
Soil The Greater Is The Strength And Also
Lesser The Voids The Greater Are The
Strength. With Structure Built On Sands
And Gravels The Settlement Is Likely To
Be Practically Completed At The End Of
Construction, But When The Site Is
Undrain By Clays Or Silts, Settlement Is
Likely To Continue For A Long Time
After Construction And Cracks May
Appear Many Years After Completion.
The Most Marked Characteristics Of
Cohesive Soils From The Engineering
Stand Point Are Their Susceptibility To
Show Volume Changes. All Soils
Containing Greater Proportion Of Clay
Expand In Bulk When Wetted And
Contracted On Drying; The Volume
Changes Cause Both Vertical And
Horizontal Movements Of The Ground,
The Vertical Movement Being Generally
The More Important.

Shrinkage And Expansion Of Clay Of
High Liquid Limit May Be Very
Detrimental. When Subjected To Load,
Even If The Pressure Is Below The
Maximum Safe Bearing Capacity, Some
Of The Contained Water Is Squeezed Out
With Consequent Diminution Of Volume,
Resulting Consolidation Settlement. The
Possibility Of Those Movements Is An
Important Consideration Even For Light
Buildings.
The Behaviour Of Clayey Soils Is Most
Treacherous When In Great Thickness As
The Total Settlement Depends On The
Thickness Of The Compressibility Of The
Layers. Care Is Also Necessary When
Building Is Relatively Steep Slopes Of
Clay, Since Downhill Creep Is
Appreciable And Often Leads To Serious
Trouble.
In Vaastushastra It Is Stated That Colour
Of Soil Is An Important Factor For
Selection Of Site Of A Building. White
Colour Is The Best Which Is Selected For
Brahmin. The Soil With Red And Yellow
Colour Is Next In Order. The Black Or
Blue Colour Soil Is Not Suitable For
Foundation. A Soil Having Bad Smell
Like That Coming From Sewer, Like That
Of A Cremating Ground Or Like A Dead
Body Should Not Be Used As A

Foundation For Structure. It May Be
Concluded That White Soil Is Good And
Black Type Soil Is Bad.
The Black Type Of Soil Is Black Cotton
Soil. The Black Cotton Soil Expands In
Wet Condition and Shrinks In Dry
Seasons. Therefore Volumetric
Expansions & Contraction Is More. When
There Is More Volumetric Changes There
May Be Differential Settlement. The
Differential Settlement In A Building Is
Dangerous And Therefore It Is Not
Permitted To Put Foundation Over That
Type Of Soil. In This Case The Vaastu
Statement Is Found Proper Considering
The Colour Of Soil.

The Apartments Follow Vastu Rules.
Even If We Cannot Expect 100%
Vastu In Case Of Apartments, It Is
Advisable To Follow At Least The
Basic Vastu Principles Which Will
Bring Progress And Peace To The
Dweller. In This Article, I Wish To
Present Such Basic Vastu Rules Which
Should Be Verified By The Buyer Or
Cuts Tenant Before Taking A Flat In An
Apartment.
External Factors
 The Following Rules Are Applicable
To The Apartment As A Whole:
 The Plot (Land) Where The Apartment
Be Is Constructed Should Be Either
Rectangular Or Square Shaped..

‘Lower Grade’ (Directions-Wise) Of The
Room. It Is Shown In The Diagram Below.
Locating The Door On The ‘Higher
Grade’ Of The Room Gives Auspicious
Results. Since This Is Auspicious For The
Head Of The Family, The Door Should Be
Located On The ‘Higher Grade’ Of The
Room.

North-North-East Part Is
‘Higher Grade’ Of The Room.
Locating The Door In This Part Gives
Auspicious Results.
2. East-North-East (450-900):
East-North-East Part Is Also The
‘Higher Grade’ Of The Room.

3. East-South-East (900-1350):
East-South-East Part Is The ‘Lower
Grade’ Of The Room. Locating The
Door In This Direction Does Not Give
Auspicious Results.
4. South-South-East (1350-1800):
South-South-East Part Is The ‘Higher
Grade’ Of The Room. It Gives
Auspicious Results By Locating The
Door Here.

5. South-South-West (1800-2250):
This Part Of The Room Is Of
‘Lower Grade’. Locating The Door In
This Direction Does Not Give
Auspicious Results. A Person Incurs
Financial Loss And The Ladies In The
House Usually Do Not Keep Good
Health.
6. West-South-West (2250-2700):
West-South-West Part Of The Room Is
Of ‘Lower Grade’. Locating The Door
The In This Direction Also Does Not Give
Auspicious Results.
7. West-North-West (2700-3150):
West-North-West Falls In The ‘Higher
Grade’ Category. Locating The Door
Here Gives Auspicious Results.
8. North-North-West (3150-00):
Gives North-North-West Part Of The Room
Is Of ‘Lower Grade’. Door In This
Area Does Not Give Auspicious
Results. If One More Door Is To Be
Located Above (On The Upper Floor)
The Door, Then The Upper Door
Should Be Slightly Smaller Than The
Lower Door. Other Doors Should Not
Be More Decorative (Ornate) Than
The Main Door. The Main Door
Should Bear Auspicious (Propitious)
Signs.

Ideal Directions Of Rooms In A Flat

 If Your Flat Has More Than One Floor Then Make Sure The
Master Bedroom Southwest Corner Master Bedroom Is On The Top Floor.
 The Ceilings Of The Floor Must Always Be In Level.

Children’s Room Northwest Corner -

Bathroom West Or South Bathroom Drains Must Always Flow In The North-East

 Furnishings Must Be Placed In The South And West Directions.

Drawing Room Northwest  Maximum Open Space Must Be Kept In South And East
Directions.

 The Cook Must Always Face East When Cooking.

Kitchen Southeast  The Water Taps In A Kitchen Must Be In The North-Eastern
Direction.

Northeast, Northwest,  Make Sure The Study Room And Pooja Rooms Are Adjacent To
Study Room North, West, East One Other. This Is Considered Very Auspicious.
Corners  The Study Table Should Be Kept In Eastern Or Northern Wall.

From The Above Observation It Is Clear
That Higher The Elevation In The East
Direction, The Building Is Exposed More
In Sun Rays In The Afternoon Which Is
Harmful For Human Body. Therefore
Vaastu Concept In This Regard Is Correct.
The Absorption Of Energy Of Building X
Is More Than 1.5 Times The Energy
Absorption Of Building Y. As The Energy
Absorption Is More, Energy Radiation Is
Also More Which Will Not Produce
Comfort To The Person Living In The
Building.
The Ill Health Of The Person Living In
This Type Of Building Is Due To Infrared
Rays Which Should Be Avoided By
Raising The Building In The West
Direction.
The Room Temperature In The Western
Direction Can Be Controlled By Making

The Colour Of The Building Is Also An
