1. Sony BMG Rootkit


 It was a malware.
 The attack was launched by Sony Company
 The motivation was to stop people from copying CS’s.
 Over 550,000 networks were affected.
 It had a bad impact on Sony’s reputation.
 This specific type of attack in now impossible due to the rights now given to a
PC owner.
2. DDos attacks in Estonia 2007
 It was a DDoS attack.
 Until now just some people where linked to this attacks, yet no group or
organization has claimed the attack.
 Political motivation. (Conflict between Russia and Estonia for the soldier’s
monument)
 Servers where mostly affected in that 22 days period.
 Destabilization of Estonia.
 Taking some extraordinary defense measures in the cyber systems.

3. OPERATION AURORA

 Operation Aurora was a cyber attack.


 Operation Aurora was launched by Elderwood Group
 According to McAfee, the primary goal of the attack was to gain access to and potentially
modify source code repositories at these high tech, security and defense contractor
companies
 This attack affected the servers.
 To prevent future cyber attacks such as Operation Aurora, Amitai Etzioni of the Institute for
Communitarian Policy Studies has suggested that the United States and China agree to a
policy of mutually assured restraint with respect to cyberspace.

4. STUXNET

 Malicious computer worm, a cyber weapon


 Was built by USA and Israel.
 Stuxnet was created to destroy the nuclear program of Iran.
 Stuxnet affected SCADA and PLC SYSTEMS

 Stuxnet is seen as the most powerful cyber weapon and could have devastating results
in the nuclear industry.

 Siemens reacted quickly and developed a software for identifying and removing the
Stuxnet worm. Siemens also recommended installing Windows patches to eliminate
operating system vulnerabilities, as well as disabling USB ports, the Stuxnet spread
path.
