Timothy Kunsak’s 2018-2019 School Year Service Hours

During the 2018-2019 school year, I completed a total of 50 service hours. This consisted

of doing service at several places. These places included the fish fry, basketball tournament,

Christmas on Troy Hill, Robotics events, the NCHS Science Fair, and finally, the march for life.

The first place that I completed service hours at was Christmas on Troy Hill. I have

worked there for the last few years, and I relay enjoy my time. That is why I keep going back to

volunteer there. My job there is to help with setup, serve food, and clean up. Setup included

placing decorations up and helping set up a robotics field for a demonstration. I also set up the

table where food would be served. That takes me into my next job at Troy Hill. I served spaghetti

at the food table. It was great to help the less fortunate during the Holiday Season and see the

smile on their faces. I did that for several hours that night. Afterwards, I cleaned up the event and

put all the decorations away. I then carried everything back to the cars and took out trash for the

night. I worked at Troy Hill for 6 hours that night from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

My next act of service this school year was the Saint Killian Parish School Basketball

Tournament. I served as a hall monitor for the event. I made sure that no kids were running in

the hall and that everyone stayed out of the Academic Wing. I also made sure that the bathrooms

were clean and that no one was making an excessive mess in the bathrooms. I was at the school

for a total of 10 hours in one day! It was a long day, but a very rewarding experience.
The next place I got my service hours was at the March for Life. I went in January with

North Catholic High School. I went to the March for Life sophomore year and I had a great time.

For this reason, I chose to go again this junior year. Of all my service, the March for Life was by

far the most rewarding. It was amazing to march for a cause and see how complete strangers

come together to fight for a common purpose. It meant a lot to act on what I have been taught

and to know that my service was very important and something that was very important to me. I

received 5 hours for the March for Life for marching for the day.

The next service that I completed was the robotics trip to Asbury Heights. Asbury

Heights is a senior living facility. We brought the robot that we built and showed it to the many

residents in the facility. It was amazing to talk to the residents and see the smiles on their faces as

we talked about the robot. They probably do not see much of their family anymore and it was fun

to talk to them. I talked about my experience on the team and what I personally built on the

robot. After my presentation, we showed the residents how to drive our robot and they drove it

themselves. They had a great time and experience with a great piece of technology. Afterwards,

we had a question and answer panel that the residents could ask us anything about technology or

our robot. I received a total of 2 hours for this trip.

My next service that I completed was working the Saint Killian Parish School Fish Fry.

My main job there was working the drink station. What I do is mix the lemonade and tea

powders and make sure all the drinks are filled. The job is very tiring as I have to carry heavy

jugs around for 4 hours on Friday’s during lent. I also fill up coffee and cups, and sometimes will

take out the trash depending on how many volunteers signed up for the week. The job is very

important, and my family loves to do it. That is why we all sign up every week. Unfortunately,
because of my robotics competition, I missed a fish fry during Lent. Afterwards, I also clean up

with my mom. During the school fish fry, I completed a total of 20 service hours.

My next form of service that I completed was the North Catholic High School

Elementary Science Fair. During this event, many 7th and 8th graders came from nearby grade

schools to compete in a science fair for scholarships. The children had a great time as they

learned many new things. One of my main jobs was working the robotics table. There, we

showed the kids our robot and drive it around to show them what it could do. It was amazing to

see how intrigued the kids were. I hope one day that these kids would join North Catholic

robotics and that I helped spark their interest in the program. My other job during this event was

teaching the children how to dye t-shirts. This is a project that my classmates and I had done

several times in AP Chemistry and I was more than thrilled to teach them my ways on how to

properly dye a shirt. After teaching the kids what I knew, I cleaned up their stations and helped

get rid of some trash and dye after the science fair. Again, this service was very rewarding as I

saw these children were so thrilled and excited to learn about robotics and STEM. I received a

total of 5 hours for this event.

My last act of service was at the Sherwood Oaks Home. Like Asbury Heights, this was

another senior living facility where we showed the residents our wonderful robot. I loved this

service as much as I loved Asbury Heights. It was rewarding to see how happy the residents were

to talk to us. I even got to meet an alum from North Catholic! He told me he was so glad that

North Catholic had made a great program. He said back in his day that they never had any

program like that. It was fun to talk to residents and answer their many questions on the topic of

technology and engineering. I received a total of 2 hours for this trip to Sherwood Oaks Senior

Living.
In conclusion, I had a great time completing all of my service hours. There was not a

single time that I left an event and felt unsatisfied. I enjoy giving back to my community and

even if service hours were not required, I would still do service every year to help out my

community and to give back.
