Enlarged view of sarcolemma and T tubules

 T tubules bring AP into deeper parts of muscle fiber

 The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is adjacent to it. Called a triad (3 pieces)
o One region of SR, another one bounding T tubule on either side.
o AP interacts with SR, causing Ca2+ release into cytoplasm which is yellow area.
 Purple rods - thick filaments. Made up of myosin
 Chain-like - Thin filaments. Made up of actin

•1. stores Calcium - SR

•2. spreads action potentials along sarcolemma into the deeper regions of the cell - T tubule
•3. contractile subunit of a muscle fiber which is made of  sarcomeres containing thick & thin
filaments - Myofibril
•4. produces ATP aerobically, for contraction - Mitochondria
•5. this subunit of a muscle fiber is made of sarcomeres lined end to end - Myofibril
•6. increases the surface area of the sarcolemma - T tubules
Sarcomere

 Can see one full sarcomere

o Parts of another one in same myofibril
o Within sarcomere, the z disk is boundary of one sarcomere and the next
sarcomere is attached to the SAME z disk or z line.
 Red line represents thin filaments
o Attached to z lines
 Purple = thick filaments.
o Notice thick filaments are ont attached like the z lines.
o Myosin molecule has two parts, has tails which is thick line and heads which is
always pointing TOWARDS z disk.
o What happens during contraction is myosin heads bind to thin filaments and pull
it toward center.

If drawing sarcomere, draw zigzag line and make it a mirror image. Any indentations of
sarcomere, thin filaments poking into center of sarcomere but not meeting in center of
sarcomere.

Within entire sarcomere, we have a region that is covering area of thick filament. - A band.
Region that spans 2 sarcomere through the z line where there is no thick filament called the I
band.
 2 portions of I band in one sarcomere.
