November 02, 2019
Competence to develop:
The student applies the concepts of physics and electromagnetism, to
determine the parameters of electromagnetic wave behavior when
propagated in guided media, using mathematical methods to solve
application exercises.
Topics to develop:
- Lines of transmission.
- Electrical parameters in transmission lines.
- Propagation in bounded transmission lines.
- Smith's letter.
Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop
This activity called “Step 4”, is individual and collaborative, for its
development you must follow the 6 acts presented below:
Act 1: Explore the academic resource "Propagation of waves in
open media" described at the beginning of the "Activities to
develop" section of this document.
Act 2: Download the “Annex 4 - Delivery format - Step 4” found in
the collaborative learning environment in the "Activities guide and
evaluation rubric - Step 4 - to analyze the waves behavior in
guided mediums and radiation" folder.
Act 3: Individually, based on the exploration carried out, answer the 4
questions proposed in the next section "Activities to develop".
Act 4: Individually, based on the exploration performed, solve the 3
proposed application exercises, you must show the procedures
performed.
Act 5: Each student must complete the application in its individual
delivery format, verifying the requirements of the evaluation rubric.
Act 6: In the 2 days, before the closing of the activity, the group
leader must gather the delivery formats of each student and compress
in a single file, which must be delivered in the Monitoring and
Evaluation Environment.

Activities to develop
For the development of this activity, explore in the Knowledge
Environment, in Unit 3, the bibliographical reference of Chen, W.
(2005), on pages 525-551, Joines, W., Bernhard, J., & Palmer, W.
(2012), on pages 23-45 and supplement with the aids generated by
the tutor within the forum, to solve the following consultation and
application exercises:

Questions: (write with your own words)

1. What do you understand by transmission line? Mention some
types.
2. What is a bounded transmission line?
3. Define the following electrical parameters of transmission lines:
a. Input impedance Z¿ .
b. Stationary wave ratio VSWR .
c. Physical length L and electrical length 𝓁.
4. What is the purpose of Smith's Letter in the study of the
propagation of waves?

Application exercises:
For the development of the following exercises, note that ¿
corresponds to the group number and CCC to the first 3 digits of the
identification number.

1. A coaxial line has the following characteristics:

Geometric parameters: a=0.35 mm b=30 mm t=( ¿+10) μm
7
Conductor properties: (conductivity) σ c =5.8 x 10 Sm/m
Properties of the insulator: σ d=1 x 10 Sm/m ϵ r=2.25 μr =1
−16

Applied signal frequency: f =CCC KHz

a. Calculate the electrical parameters R L C G.
b. Using the distributed model, calculate the propagation
parameters α , β , γ ∧Z 0 .
c. Calculate the propagation velocity V p, the wavelength λ and
the attenuation α dB / Km.

Figure 1: Geometrical parameters in coaxial line.

2. A Z o=50 Ω lossless transmission line has a Z L =45− j 75 Ω. If it is ¿ m

long and the wavelength is CCC mm. Find and probe with the
smith chart:
a. Input impedance Z¿ .
b. Reflection coefficient Γ (magnitude and phase).
c. VSWR.

Figure 2: Graphic representation of the transmission line.

3. Bearing in mind that Smith's letter is used to determine
parameters of the transmission lines, use the "Smith 4.1"
software found in the practical learning environment to check
the results obtained in point 2.
a. Input impedance Z¿ .
b. Reflection coefficient Γ .
c. VSWR.
d. Find an electrical length 𝓁 where the input impedance Z¿ is
real.

Use of The APA standards are the most used style of
references organization and presentation of information. These are
published under a manual that allows you to have
access to the ways in which a scientific article should
be presented. Here you can find the most relevant
aspects of the sixth edition of the APA Standards
Manual, such as references, citations, preparation and
presentation of tables and figures, headings and
seriation, among others. You can check how to
implement them by going to http://normasapa.com/
In the agreement 029 of December 13, 2013, article
99, the mistakes that infringe upon the academic
order, among others, are the following: paragraph e)
“To plagiarize is to present as your own work the whole
or part of a writing, report, task or document of
invention performed by another person. It also implies
the use of cites or lack of references, or includes cites
where there is no coincidence between them and the
reference” and paragraph f) ”To reproduce, or copy for
Plagiarism
profit, educational resources or results of research
policy
products, which have intellectual rights reserved for the
University”.
The academic punishments that the student will face
are:
a) In case of academic fraud proved in the academic
work or evaluation, the score achieved will be zero
(0.0) without leading to disciplinary measures.
b) In case of plagiarism proved in the academic work of
any nature, the score achieved will be zero (0.0),
without leading to disciplinary measures.
