Component 4.a: ​Demonstrate verbal and nonverbal communication skills that convey

Artifact: PED 356 Adapted Physical education & Sport Letters to Parents

Date: Fall 2019

Reflection:

My verbal and nonverbal communication skills were assessed during PED 356
Adapted Physical Education and Sport. During this lab I had the opportunity to
communicate with the parents of my students before and after each class. This allowed
me to fill them in on any information necessary and they were able to do the same with
me. It was good being able to know how my students are doing outside of the
classroom because that helped me shape my teaching for each day. At the end of the
semester I wrote the parents of my students letters to inform them about how their child
did overall in the skill builders program.

The letters to the parents of my students relate to component 4.a in the following
manner. I took all the data and experiences that I had and put that into my writing when
composing these letters. It was very important to me that I touched on all important
aspects that I noticed throughout my teaching. I made sure I pointed out all the great
things that I saw about their children. It was also important to me that I discussed
possible weaknesses so that they can continue to work on them with their child outside
of school. This letter allowed the parents of my students to understand exactly what I
was teaching their children throughout the semester.

Being able to communicate properly is important because it is how you will get
across to the people around you. This group includes teachers, students, parents, and
many more. It is essential to be able to talk professionally and properly across all
encounters both verbal and nonverbal. A quality physical education teacher must be
proficient with their communication skills.
