Basic Training is designed to teach him how the Navy works and how he will
become a member of a crew. He will learn about teamwork, living with other people, life
on board ship, first aid, and survival at sea. Some of this training will take place in the
classroom while others involve more practical activities such as five days at sea on a
training vessel and weapons training with rifles. Basically, he learns everything you need
to know about life in the Navy.

Read the information about jobs in Royal Australian Navy. Circle the correct
answer A, B or C.
Jobs in Royal Australian Navy (RAN) are important. You'll defend Australia's coast,
protect her from illegal fishing, drug-running and illegal immigration. It's you who help
people during times of flood, storm and other natural disasters.
Navy life is characterised by two distinct periods: life at sea and life ashore. Depending
on your job, you'll probably spend about equal time at both. When you are at sea, your
ship will regularly visit different ports. You might be in a foreign port for a week, so you
can take time off to visit the local areas.
When based ashore, most people do the same job as they do on board the ship, because
there are many ships and submarines in port that need to be repaired and maintained.
However, a typical working day finishes earlier, at around 4.00 pm, and on Fridays you
finish by 1.00 pm! Sporting activities are included into your week in amongst your job
duties.

1. Why are the jobs in the Royal Australian Navy important?

A. Because the naval officers protect the coast.
B. Because the naval officers help people who suffer from natural disasters.
