Segovia did nt study with Tarrega; however, he admits to an indirect influ- ‘ence through Llobet (see Segovia autobiography, pp. 29-101) and speaks highly of the “Master's” school Llobet: His Life Miguel Licbot Soles was bom October 18, 1878 and died Febru- ary 22, 1988 in Barcolona, Spain. His fathor, a famous wood ‘sculptor, nurtured the boy along in the graphic arts until ho was, ‘leven. Then in 1889 his uncle brought a guitar into the house- hold. He began studying the instrument with Magin Alegre who in that same year took the young Llobet to hear the blind Spanish virtuoso of the guitar Antonio Jimenez Manjén (1866-1919). It was afterthis concert, on December 16, 1869, that Llobet decided upon the guitar as his life's ambition. He stated that Manjon had lett an indelible Impression upon him. In October of 1882 Magin Alogre took his 14-year-old puplto the duitar shop "Casa de los Guitarreros,”" a farnous gathering place Of guitarists in Barcolona which Tarrega himsolt froquentod. ‘Alagre presented he youth to Térrega, whereuponthe youngster performed exercises and studies demonstrating his abilies, Ths, shop also had a smal hall used for local performances. It was shor after thelr frst meting that Llobet frst heard Térrega play in thaso intimate surroundings, Térroga performed his arrango- ments of Granada by Albéniz andthe Overture to Tannhauserby Wagner. ‘At the age of 16 Llobot attended the Municipal Conservatory of Music where he continued hs studios with Tarrega, Some of the students and friends at this music institute were Pablo Casals, Emilio Pujol, Ricardo Vines, Gaspar Cassad6 and other Gatalo- nian notables. By 1898, at the age of 20, Llobet began his frst series of private congaris. These were typical gatherings of intimate frends who were connected with Tarrega and the con- servatory. In 1900, Llobet gave aconcertin Malaga where he met, ‘Tarroga's patroness, Dofia Concepcion Jacoby. twas atthistime that she began to patronize Llobet, from which a small dispute arose between Térrega and Liobol. Térrega did not let this inckient affect his trendship with Llobet.
