Page 5 ‘The three (3) boreholes for standard penetration tests and taking undisturbed samples were drilled with the boring machine wireline logging. The bores were drilled to maximum depths of 20.0m. Drilling procedure carried out in accordance with ASTM D 1452 as follows: © The boring holes for taking undisturbed samples and SPT tests were of 110mm diameter 8.00m casing was needed; * The boring was advanced incrementally to permit intermittent or continuous sampling. Test interval and location are normally stipulated by the project engineer or geologist. Typically, the interval was set to 1.50m in homogeneous strata with test and sampling location at every change of strata; «Drill a hole of 1.50m deep, clear the hole without soll sampling. XY-1SM machines take undisturbed soil samples and after that carry out SPT tests; + The same drilling procedure repeated from the ground surface up to a depth: Where N value (shown in SPT test procedure) reached a value more than 50. At that level, the drilling will continue 3 times at 1.50m each time and will stop if N value still exceeded 50. If not, the drilling shall continue. ©. The Client has requested. 2.3. Soll sampling 2.3.1. Undisturbed soil samples Undisturbed (UD) samples were taken in the natural state of the cohesive soil for strength and deformation tests. The undisturbed samples were taken by hydraulically pressing the tube into the ground to minimize soil disturbance. Immediately after taken from the hole, the obtained UD samples are visually examined, identified, described using the trimming from the top and bottom ends of the tube and carefully sealed with paraffin wax, labeled and transported to laboratory. UD samples are preserved and stored properly in accordance with ASTM D 4220 standard to secure the performance of laboratory testing. 2.3.2. Disturbed samples ‘The disturbed samples were taken at a rate of 1.50m and at all strata in the boreholes. The disturbed samples were also collected in soft to hard clay and loose to very dense sand or gravel. ‘After taken from the borehole, samples are visually examined, packed, labeled and stored in thick plastic bags. ‘Soil Testing Laboratory Co,.Ead 368 Krom 19, Tapaing Chk, Teak hla, Sen Sok, Phnom Penk, Cambodia To: 955 12) 52 7279 Tel (85516) 834034 ~ Esai s!368@hyahoo.com FINAL REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR ORKIDE VILLA PROJECT. Page 6 23.3, Ground-water level ‘Water inflow in borehole was measured during drilling. ‘After the completion of drilling, ground-water level was allowed to stabilize at least 24 hours and then was measured. 2.4, Standard penetration test - SPT This test is done in accordance with ASTM D1586. The purpose of the test is to determine stiffness or compactness of the soil layers by measuring N-value and to obtain the representative samples of each layer. The test uses a thick-walled sample tube, with an outside diameter of 50.8mm and an inside diameter of 37mm, and a length of around 650mm. This is driven into the ground at the bottom of a borehole by blows from a standard weight of 63.5kg falling through a distance of 760mm. The sample tube Is driven 450mm into the ground and then the number of blows needed for the tube to penetrate each 150mm is recorded. The number of blows required to achieve the last 300mm penetration is the standard penetration resistance N. The test was performed in accordance with ASTM standard using Chinese SPT equipment. The test was performed at 1.5 meter intervals of depth. In this project, total 39 numbers of SPT were taken in order to get the information and technical data on the strength and type of soil. Classification and description of soil are performed accordance to ASTM standards as follows: ‘+ Classification and description of soil; ‘+ Physic-mechanical characteristics of soil; = Geotechnical characteristics of soil; * Ground water level. 4.1, Classification and description of soil layers According to the investigation results, soil layers that distribution from natural ground surface to depth of 20.0m were classified and described as follows: Layer 1: Very loose to medium dense poorly-graded SAND with silt (SP-SM) This layer is encountered from the ground surface. The bottom depth of this layer alters from 8.5m (borehole BH2) to 10.0m (borehole BH1). Its thickness alters from 8.5m to 10.0m and average of 9.0m. N value (SPT) is 4 to 15 blows. ‘The main composition is sand with silt. Soil is yellowish grey colored and SPT consistency is very loose to medium dense. Layer 2: Firm to very stiff lean CLAY (CL) This layer distributes under layer 1. The bottom depth of this layer alters from 13.0m (borehole BH1) to 14.0m (borehole BH2). Its thickness alters from 3.0m to 5.5m and average of 4.3m. N value (SPT) is 7 to 20 blows. ‘The main composition is clay and silt. Soil is brown colored and SPT consistency is firm to very stiff Layer 3: Soft to stiff SILT (ML) This layer distributes under layer 2. The bottom depth of this layer is at the depth of 20.0m. Its thickness is not determined because the bottom of borehole BHt still locates within this layer. N value (SPT) is 3 to 12 blows. ‘The main composition is silt and clay. Soil layers include: © Layer 1: (SP-SM) Very loose to medium dense poorly-graded SAND with sift with thickness of 9.0m; © Layer 2: (CL) Firm to very stiff lean CLAY with thickness of 4.3m; + Layer 3: (ML) Soft to stiff SILT with thickness of over 6.7m. 4 The engineering properties of soil layers within the investigation area are classified as medium strength (depend on type of foundation and work load). ‘For small and medium work load, shallow foundation or driven pile foundation should be designed and pile tips should put into the layer 1 or middle of layer 2, Bearing capacity of pile foundation at different depths is presented in Chapter 5. Choosing the appropriate depth of pile tip and diameter should depend on the real load of the construction and materials of pile. % The all of ditto foundation analyses only based on soil foundation conditions, empirical equations and it is only reference, The calculation for foundation design is responsibility of construction designer.
