Two tickets to freedom.

Ellen’s story.

Born in 1826

Founders of Macon.

Masters could make the slaves do whatever they wanted.

If the woman slave got a child with her master, the child was a slave too.

Ellen couldn’t please her mistress. Her presence offended her mistress, because she was the child of her
mistress’ husband.

She tried hard to be helpful, but it didn’t work.

Her mother often helped her, and said that she had a better life than all the other slaves.

Ellen’s job was easy, just helping her mother.

All children worked by their mother’ side as soon as they could walk.

Ellen knew that she had a good master and mistress compared to other slaves.

But she wished that she could please her mistress.

She knew that she didn’t get sold, wasn’t because of kindness. Her ‘’father’’ wouldn’t allow it.

Once a guest had said that the master had a very pretty daughter. But her mistress had yelled and said that
she was a slave. Now it was enough. She found a way to get away with Ellen. Her daughter, Eliza was about
to get married and she offered Ellen as a gift for them.

Ellen was now owned by Dr. Robert Collins.

She was sad about leaving her mother, but glad that she was going away from her mistress.

Her new owner was a very wealthy man. He owned 10,000 acres of farmland.

Ellen was now taken to College Hill.

Her new mistress was kind to her, and she grew up in a beautiful home as her mistress’ personal maid.

But she wasn’t happy. She missed her mom and friends.

She wouldn’t ever get children, because they could never be hers.

She could never forget the bitter core of slavery.
