TECHNICAL NOTE
BARRIER PROPERTIES OF BAREX 210AND 218 RESINS
Barex 210 and 218 high barrier resins are impact modified acrylonitrile ~ methyl acrylate
copolymers. Barex 218 contains a higher proportion of impact modifier for enhanced toughness
and flexibility
Jn food packaging applications the high gas barrier properties of Barex resins ensure product
longevity, shelf life, and retention of natural odour and taste by sealing in desirable gases such as
carbon dioxide and nitrogen, while simultaneously sealing out oxygen.

Barex resins are used in direct food contact applications, and are especially suitable for packaging
processed meats fish, cheese, spices and sauces, Their exceptional barrier properties make Barex
resins an excellent choice for controlled, or modified atmosphere packaging,

74HUMIDITY AND OXYGEN BARRIER PERFORMANCE
Barex resins offer high bassicr 10 oxygen atall levels of retative humidity from 0% up to 100%. Not
all barrier materials are capable of this; oxygen permeability of other high barrier resins can be
significantly increased by moisture. Selection of Barex ensures that 2 consistently high barrier to
‘oxygen is maintained irrespective of humidity level.

‘TEMPERATURE AND OXYGEN BARRIER PERFORMANCE
Barrier performance is also dependent upon temperature, The following table shows the oxygen

‘A comparison ofthe water vapour barsier properties of Barex resins shows them to be comparable
‘with other polar materials, but modest in respect of non-polar polyolefins, In applications where
exclusion of moisture is eritical, the water Vapour barrier of Barex resins can be enhanced by
luminating co polyethylene, taus givingan excellent combination of high gas and moisture batter.
