NUSRL, Ranchi will conduct CLAT 2020 on May 10 from 3 pm to 5 pm in a pen-paper based

test mode. CLAT syllabus is helpful in planning a preparation strategy in order to score well in
the upcoming law entrance exam.

Highlights of CLAT 2020 Syllabus


As the exam committee has approved and confirmed some changes in the exam pattern, they
also described the following features about the syllabus of upcoming examination:

Subjects - The question paper will be based on the English language, Quantitative Techniques,
Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning

Level of questions - The level of CLAT syllabus for each section of CLAT question paper will be
as under:

English language - Class 12th level


Current affairs including General Knowledge - Class 12th level
Legal Reasoning - Class 12th level
Logical Reasoning - Class 12th level
Quantitative Techniques - Class 10th level

Section-Wise CLAT Syllabus 2020

Section 1: English including Comprehension


In this section, proficiency in English is tested on the basis of questions related to
comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates are
evaluated on the basis of their understanding of the passage, the central theme, meanings of
words used in the passage etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect
grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

The will be passages of 450 words based on the contemporary, historically significant fiction
and non-fiction writing
The passages will consume 5-7 mins to read and comprehend it and candidates have to
compare and contrast different viewpoints, draw out inferences and conclusions, and also
understand the meaning of words and phrases from the passage to attempt the questions.

Section 2: General Knowledge and Currents Affairs


In this section, candidates are evaluated on the basis of their general awareness including static
general knowledge. Current affair questions test a candidate’s knowledge about the events
happening nationally as well as internationally. To prepare for this section, candidates are
advised to be up-to-date with news and other topics discussed in mainstream media from March
2019 to April 2020.

This section will also carry passages of around 450 words and will be based on news,
journalistic sources and other non-fiction writings
The passages will carry legal information and knowledge besides contemporary events in India
and the world, arts and culture, world affairs as well as historical events of continuing
significance.

Section 3: Quantitative Techniques


In this section, the candidate’s knowledge of elementary mathematics i.e. up to Class 10th
standard will be tested. The section will carry passages based on short sets of facts,
propositions, graphs, pictorials, textuals or diagrammatic representation of numerical data.
Candidates have to attempt the objective-type of questions based by calculating the information.
The candidates have to derive, infer and manipulate the numerical data which will be based on
ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration, and statistics. The books candidates can

Section 4: Legal Aptitude
The section will carry passages of around 450 words and will be based on the legal matters,
public policy questions or moral philosophical enquiries. The questions will be based on general
awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues, therefore, candidates with little or no
knowledge of law subjects can attempt the section easily. They will be required to read and infer
the rules and principles and facts based situations to attempt the questions. Candidates can

Section 5: Logical Reasoning


The logical reasoning section of CLAT 2020 will carry passages of around 300 words based on
relationships, analogies, logical sequences and arguments. Candidates will be required to
critically analyse the arguments, the pattern of reasoning, identify contradictions and then

CLAT Syllabus 2020 – The Consortium of National Law Universities has released the CLAT
2020 syllabus on its official website. The syllabus of CLAT 2020 gives an overview of subjects
candidates have to cover while doing their preparation. CLAT syllabus 2020 contains all the
topics which will form the basis of the test paper. It should be noted that CLAT 2020 syllabus is
different for 5-year integrated LLB than the one for LLM admission test. The CLAT syllabus for

English - In this section, the questions will be based on comprehension passages of 450 words
each, mainly derived from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing.
In the comprehension section, candidates will be assessed on their understanding of the
passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein, etc. The comprehension
passage will be followed by a series of questions based on the passage. The questions will also
be asked to test candidate's knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, word phrase and meaning
etc.

Mathematics- Under this section, the questions will be asked from elementary maths and will be
intended to test the candidate's basic ability to derive information from passages, graphs, or
other representations, As per the latest changes, the maths section will strictly be based on the

Logical Reasoning- In this section, candidates will be given passages of around 300 words
each. From each passage, one or more questions will be asked in the examination. Logical
reasoning topics include the following topics.

Legal Aptitude- This section will also contain the comprehension based questions of 450 words
each. The passages will contain topics from legal matters, public policy questions or moral
philosophical enquiries. The section will contain preposition and facts based problems. Having a
general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues will be helpful in understanding the
passages and solving questions form them. The legal aptitude section intends to test candidates
on the following aspects.

Identifying and inferring the principles and rules given in the passage.
Applying the given rules and principles in various situations.
Understanding the changes in the application of various fact situations with the changes in the
rules and principles
CLAT Syllabus 2020 for LLM - An overview
The conducting body has notified the changes to the CLAT PG syllabus 2020 through the
notification. The topics included in the syllabus are more or less similar, but this year, the
questions will be comprehension type along with subjective type questions. In the
comprehensive type section, candidates will be given comprehension passages from which
candidates will have to answer the objective type questions. In the second section, candidates
will have to answer two essay type questions.

What type of comprehension passages may appear in CLAT 2020 for LLM?

The comprehension passage may include a short article revolving around the issues of law or
may include legal, factual, and philosophical issues. Candidates will be expected to have
awareness about the issues discussed in the passage along with the legal and political aspects
that form the theme of the comprehension.

constitutions. The majority of this body of law has developed from state and federal supreme
court rulings, which interpret their respective constitutions and ensure that the laws passed by
the legislature do not violate constitutional limits.

Law of Torts- In common law jurisdictions, it is a civil wrong that causes a claimant to suffer loss
or harm resulting in legal liability for the person who commits the tortious act.
