3D Transform Filter
by Matt Kloskowski
ExtremePhotoshop.com

This week we'll visit one of those rarely used filters - the 3D transform filter. Don't get
scared. I think you'll find the effect we come up with is very familiar to you and popular
these days.

Step 1: Start out with an image thats 500 x 500 pixels. Create a new layer above the
background. Then go to Filter->Render->3D Transform. Select the cube tool and Drag a
bunch of long rectangles on the image like I have here. We're trying to go for a city tall
building type feel so that is why I chose long cubes.

Step 2: Next, select the rotate tool. Rotate the image until you have something like I
have here. You want to make sure that all of the sides are shaded and not transparent.
Also, try to make it look like you are above looking down at the cubes.
Step 3: Then click OK to apply the effect. You may have to hit Ctrl+T to bring up the
free transform tool and rotateyour image until it looks as if it were a city that you were
looking down at.

Step 4: Then hit Ctrl+U for the Hue and Saturation dialog box. Click colorize and choose
a dark blue color (I used H:210 S:50 L:-45).

Step 5: Looks cool but we need to add a little more to make it more trendy. So go to
your background later and apply a linear gradient. I used one of the defaults that comes
with photoshop.
Step 6: Finally, I added a silhouette figure to the image and dropped the opacity a little.

Thats it for this week. I hope you enjoyed our trek into the land of seldom used filters.

psd's for the tutorials you see here. (Yes, I know I still have a Christmas image on the
home page. I promise I will get rid of it soon!)
