Title of the Thesis: Critical Analysis of Investment Avenues Available to an Individual


(With Special Reference to Investment Pattern of Indore City)

Objectives of Research:

The basic objective of the study was to present a detailed picture of various investment
avenues available to an individual assessee. Within the framework of this overall
objective, it aimed at the following:

1. To provide a comprehensive information kit on various investment avenues to


improve the skills of the investors while playing in the so called 'complex' world
of investment.
2. To present a framework for selection and management of portfolio for
investment in securities.
3. To make possible suggestions for strengthening the working of securities market
in keeping with the expectations of the investors.
4. Analyzing how the investors view the information on various investment decision
inputs and highlighting their post investment reactions/behavior.
5. Presenting investor's profile with respect to age, gender, income, line experience,
occupation, objective of investment investment return choices.
6. Seeks to improve investor's skills in managing investments in rational and
systematic manner.

Hypothesis of Research:

1. Life insurance policy is the most preferred investment option in case of all tax
payers.
2. Tax planning is the main objective of investment.
3. An individual invests in different investment options.
4. Investment in volatile shares is the most speculative decision.

Research Methodology:

The research study was based on both primary and secondary data. The primary
data was collected through a well-designed structured questionnaire. References
of various books on various investment options for getting inputs and
incorporating tax implications was made. Analysis of related articles, reports and
comments published in leading newspapers and magazines was made for
incorporating current trends, rates, mechanics and regulations etc. Personal
interactions with guide, faculties and seniors was made. Surfing on internet for
understanding current and latest investment portfolios opted by investors.

Major Findings:

1. Study revealed that majority of the sample investors belong to the age-group of 30
to 45 years.
2. Study revealed that majority of the sample investors are married.
3. So far as the occupation is concerned, service class people invest more in
comparison to businessmen, professionals etc.
4. Tax saving is the main objective of an investment. Future benefits and regular
income are also some major objectives. People, who fall in tax brackets, usually
invest with a tax saving objective.
5. Most of the females, after Life insurance policy investment opt for post office
deposits. It shows that female prefers safety most.
6. Volatility is suppose to continue therefore the investors should follow Systematic
Investment Plan (SIP) and invests some money every month in a disciplined
manner and creates wealth over time.

Conclusion:

All investments are risky, as the investor parts with his money. An efficient investor
with proper training can reduce the risk and maximize returns. He can avoid pitfalls and
protect his interests.
As such, investor has to use his discretion, which is an art to be acquired by learning and
experience. Principles of investment and the art of the management of investment are
basic requirements for a successful investor.
