Explanation A statue of Bishamonten was once enshrined at Nakagawaji Temple in Yamato (now Nara
Prefecture). After this statue leaked outside the temple, it was held by the Japanese painter
Hashimoto Sekiyuki and Kawabata Ryuko, and is now in the Tokyo National Museum. In the space
inside the statue, the Buddha of Bishamonten, like the statue, was discovered.
The Indo-Buddha is a stamp-type woodblock print showing the appearance of a ghost, and it was
often delivered inside a statue of a Buddha to convey prayer. Despite being a simple technique, this
Indo-Buddha boasts a high degree of perfection with well-proportioned proportions and accurate
expression of the texture of each part. At present, four sheets are printed on a single sheet of paper,
but this is a large piece of paper with many Bishamonten statues printed and lined up. On the back
side, there is a "Senpai" ink book and you can see the total number produced. In addition, some of
the same type of Indo-Buddha have ink-prints indicating that they were memorialized in the 116th
year of Oho, which is a clue to know the age of the Indo-Buddha and the statues.
