About the Illustrator

A West
Coast Carol Evans had her start by the sea. She was born in
Vancouver, British Columbia and for most of her childhood,

Summer grew up with the sights and the sounds and the smells of
coastal life. It was as an adult, when she lived on small
Mudge Island, rowing back and forth across the intertidal
realm of False Narrows, she became enraptured with the
beauty and life of the sea. That was when she made first
attempts to capture it in watercolour paintings.
Her fascination was not only with the water and shore, but
with all the life around its edges; the animals, birds and
people living on and around the sea. Over the years she has
painted many scenes of children and families exploring,
adventuring and enjoying the beach. When Harbour
Publishing proposed a collection of her paintings of children

How the Author Began Writing

Carol Evans began painting in watercolour when she was

twelve, having a teacher who celebrated the subtle play
between water and pigment, encouraging students to let the
paint flow and spread on water-soaked paper. From that
time till this, she has been developing and refining her art.
Her paintings have been in many shows, have achieved
international acclaim and are in
many private collections
around the world.

About the Book - Inspiration

Essentially, Caroline's poem is a love song to the sea,

written in the language of a child who is eagerly anticipating
long, summer days on the water. Her lilting descriptions of
life at the beach reveal a deep love and respect for all
aspects of coastal life. This makes a perfect match for the
depth of feeling in Evans' paintings. It is the hope that if
children grow up with a love of the sea, they will want to
care for it, protect it and keep it beautiful for the
generations who follow them.
