1. What caused the papacy to be relocated to Avignon, France in 1309?

Give background
on controversy and support reasons behind the move. The relocation happened when
Pope Boniface VIII was killed on the account of Philip IV of France. The controversy was
in the declaration of officiality for the Popes that had moved, but in the end, they would
return back to Rome near the beginning of the 15th century.
2. Pope Clement V refused to relocate to Rome when elected to the papacy. Why would he
refuse? Support. He refused because of the power struggle between Popes and Kings in
Rome. The frustration was over the separation of church and state, seeing that the
churches views did not coincide with the states.
3. Give examples of ways the French monarchy tried to keep the popes located in Avignon.
They gave the Popes freedom which they did not have back in Rome, thus establishing
the Popes with a sense of power and comfort in this new state.
4. For what reasons was the papacy moved back to Rome in 1376? What issues were
caused by the move? The papacy was moved back to Rome after antipope Benedict XIII
lost most of his support, and so he fled to Perpignan in 1403. The papacy was then
returned back to Rome.
5. Did the Avignon Papacy period hurt the prestige of the church? If so, give examples of
the harm that was done. If not, give your reasoning. The Avignon Papacy did not hurt the
prestige of the church, if anything it made it stronger. By allowing Popes to have a sense
of freedom and comfort in Avignon, the church was able to grow in power, all while
staying separate from the monarchy that reigned. It wasn’t until the antipope that things
went south.
