biography

Properly Cited Source: Camus, Albert (1913-1960)." Encyclopedia of World

Biography. Thomson Gale, 1998. General OneFile. Web. 8 Dec. 2010.

Summary: he was born on Nov. 7, 1913. He lived a childhood of poverty. He was very

intelligent and took interest in drama during school. He directed and acted in plays. He

engaged in journalism.

Important Quotations: "Camus developed a conception of the "absurd," which provides

the theme for much of his earlier work: the "absurd" is the gulf between, on the one hand,

man's desire for a world of happiness, governed by reason, justice, and order, a world

which he can understand rationally and, on the other hand, the actual world, which is

chaotic and irrational and inflicts suffering and a meaningless death on humanity. The

second stage in Camus's thought developed from the first--man should not simply accept

the "absurd" universe, but should "revolt" against it. This revolt is not political but in the

name of the traditional humane values."

Insight into The Stranger: Albert Camus was into drama , directing, and acting in plays.

He engaged in journalism and had many ideas, which led him to writing many of his own

books.

immigration

Library. Ed. Lawrence W. Baker, et al. Vol. 5: Primary Sources. Detroit: UXL, 2004.

100-113. Gale U.S. History In Context. Web. 8 Dec. 2010.

Summary: Many immigrants went to the Hull House. They didn’t really know how to

deal with their new surroundings, which made it kind of difficult. They had to learn to

cope with what they had, and make the best out of things. Not all immigrants had it easy.

It was definitely harder for immigrants to find jobs, which made their life very hard.

People felt like immigrants were invading in on their country, and treated them very bad.

Important quotations: “The woman's role in the family was made vastly more difficult

in the new setting. Many immigrant women did not know how to function in an urban

environment, much less one in which they did not speak the language well.”-“There were

many cases of such a role reversal: in America, it was the English-speaking, more

streetwise children who had to show immigrant parents how things worked in their new

world.”-“The sense of loss felt by immigrants was not limited to women. Addams tells

the story of a man who used to be a skilled goldsmith, capable of making beautiful

jewelry, who could only find work in a factory in Chicago. The loss of being able to do

the work he loved drove him to heavy drinking and eventually to kill himself. The

struggle to live—to earn money for food and shelter—robbed some immigrants of their

joy in work and the joy of life itself”

Insight into The Stranger: Albert Camus was an immigrant himself. He could’ve been

going through many hardships also. People could have looked at him as invading their

country, and could have treated him very different, almost as if he wasn’t a person.

existentialism

Properly Cited Source: Howells, Valerie. "Choices and Conflicts: Essays on Literature

and Existentialism." The Modern Language Review 102.2 (2007): 471+. Literature

Resource Center. Web. 8 Dec. 2010.

Summary: existentialiam is a movement stressind personal experience and

responsibility. It is this idea that this is what makes a person who they are through their

personal experiences. Also , the things they have responsibility for and the things they so

through is what can make a person.

Important Quotations: “The opening section provides a readable account of the

historical development of the term 'existence' into modern philosophy, and a thorough,

accessible introduction to Kierkegaard's notion of existence and the existential

phenomenologists' theoretical reworking of his ideas.”

Insight into The Stranger: Meursault’s actions made him who he is. After he killed the

Arab, all he grew to know was the grey walls in the jail sell. He proves that ones’

personal experience can make a person who they are.

absudism

into Orderly Disorder." Comparative Drama 34.3 (2000): 359. Literature Resource

Center. Web. 8 Dec. 2010.

Summary: Its an idea in which humans live in an isolate world. They also feel it is
Rogers 4

meaningless and irrational. Some feel like it is just a chaotic world, and absurd.

Important Quotations: “Striving to forge ties between chaos theory, naturalism, and

absurdism, Demastes contends that Esslin's ideas (and those of other contemporary

critics) are too limited. He asserts that Beckett was not the absurdist that Esslin called

him, nor even a "postmodernist integrating classical assumptions" (58), as Vivian

Mercier would label him, but rather a proto-chaotician, who glimpses the possibility of

order and regeneration all the while trudging the dreary path toward dissolution, death,

and ultimate entropy.”

Insight into The Stranger: Again, after Meursault killed the Arab his world became

meaningless, and very chaotic. His life was just sitting in the jail cell. The part when he

went to trial was very chaotic because he didn’t feel the need to cooperate with the

lawyer, and the people representing him weren’t much help either.

france 1942

Properly Cited Source: "France, 1789-1945." Historic World Events. Detroit: Gale,

2010. Gale World History In Context. Web. 8 Dec. 2010.

Summary: France was a part or World War II. Also the French forces took part in the

fighting that made the Allies invade the North.

Important Quotations: “The Free French forces took part in the fighting that followed

the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942, and in 1943 a provisional French

government was established at Algiers. Regular French units and resistance fighters alike

fought in the 1944 campaign that drove the Germans from France, and shortly after the

liberation of Paris, de Gaulle's provisional government moved from Algiers to the capital.

It was officially recognized by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the former

USSR in October 1944.”Insight into The Stranger: There was a lot going on in France

in the 1940’s. The war might have led to Albert Camus’ use of violence in his book.
