Problem 1. Sketch both a contour map and the graph of f (x, y) = x2 + 9y 2 .

Problem 2. Find ∂f /∂x and ∂f /∂y if

a) f (x, y) = x2 y 3 z 4
2
b) g(x, y) = cos(x
y
)
for y 6= 0.
c) h(x, y) = (x, y) · a where a = (a1 , a2 ) is a fixed vector and · is the inner product.

Problem 3. Compute the matrix of partial derivatives of the function f : R3 → R2 given by f (x, y, z) =
(x + ez + y, yx2 ).

Problem 4. Use the chain rule to show that if z = f (x − y) then ∂z/∂x + ∂z/∂y = 0.

Problem 5. Find an equation of the tangent plane given to the surface z = xsin(x + y) at the point (−1, 1, 0).

Problem 6 Find ∂z/∂s and ∂z/∂t if z = x2 y 3 and x = s cost, y = s sint.

Problem 7 Let f (x, y, z) = x2 yz − xyz 3 .

a) Find the gradient of f evaluated at the point (2, −1, 1).
b) Find the directional derivative of f at (2, −1, 1) along v =< 0, 4/5, −3/5 >.

Problem 8 Consider the function which defined on all (x, y) 6= (0, 0) by f (x, y) = x2xy +y 2
. and on (0, 0) by
f (0, 0) = 0. Show that,, using the definition of the partial derivative as a limit, that both fx (0, 0) and fy (0, 0)
exist. Explain why fx and fy are not continuous at (0, 0).
