Problem 1

An ISA 100x100x10 carries a load of 220 kN. It is connected to a gusset plate of 12 mm

thickness. Design the joint using HSFG bolts of 16 mm diameter & property class 8.8, when
i) No slip is permitted
ii) Slip is permitted
Steel is of Fe410 grade

Soln;
Load = 220 kN (assumed to be the factored load)

Bolt diameter = 16mm, diameter of bolt hole d0, 16+2=18mm

Minimum pitch distance 2.5d, 2.5x16 = 40mm

Minimum edge/end distance 1.7d0, 1.7x18 = 30.6mm

Adopt pitch distance of 45mm and edge/end distance of 35mm

Case i:
Design strength of HSFG bolts Vdsf

F0 = Anbxf0
Anb = 0.78x(π/4)x(162)=156.8
f0 = 0.7x800 = 560 N/mm2

Slip resistance designed at ultimate load

γ mf =1.25
0.55x1x1.0x(156.8x560) = 48.2944 x103 N

Vdsf = 48.29/1.25 = 38.632 kN

No of bolts required = 220/38.632 = 5.6

Use 6 bolts with pitch of 45 mm.

Case ii:
When slip is permitted the bolts will behave like bearing type of bolts.
Hence the design strength of bolts is governed by their shear capacity (V dsb) and bearing
capacity (Vdpb).

Design shear capacity of bolts

(800/√3)x(1x156.8+0) = 72.42 x 103 N

Vdsb = 72.42/1.25
= 57.93 kN
Kb ;
Design bearing capacity of bolts e/3d0, 35/(3x18) = 0.648
p/3d0-0.25, 45/(3x18)-0.25 = 0.583
fub/fu, 800/410 = 1.9
Kb = 0.583

2.5x0.583x16x10x410
= 95.61 x 103 N

Vdpb = 95.61/1.25
= 76.48 kN

Design strength of bolts - 57.93 kN

No of bolts required, 220/57.93 = 3.7

Use 4 bolts at 45 mm pitch distance.
