Downlink Transport Channel Processing:
Modulation processing, DL shared channel, DL
control channel processing, MIMO modes, HARQ
Modulation processing (Ref. Figure 7.1)
● Scrambling
● Modulation mapping
● Layer mapping
● Pre coding
● Resource mapping
● OFDM Signal generation.
The codeword is first scrambled. The bits in the block of scrambled codeword are
mapped into a block of complex modulation symbols. The next process include
layer mapping, precoding , resource mapping and finally OFDM signal generation.
Layer mapping
Block diagram figure 7.6
Each codeword (O/p of channel coding) is mapped into one or multiple layers and
then precoded.
DL shared channel
Block diagram: OFDMA signal gen. with N users Figure 7.8
Multi antenna transmission in DL shared channel
Supported in LTE
Note: Antenna port is a logical entity which is associated with referense signal. Not
physical antenna.
DL Control channels
Channel for control information.

At Rx. : If received code block correspond to retransmission, the code block will be
combined with the previous version. Rx. send NACK if error is detected.
At Tx. : For each transmission, the same turbo encoded data is transmitted with
different puncturing. Each of these retransmissions has different puncturing/
different RV
