According to Geert Hofstede, "Culture is the collective programming of the mind that
distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from others". This text
describes the six dimensions of national cultures according to Geert Hofstede which
are: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism vs collectivism, masculinity vs
femininity, long vs short term orientation, and indulgence vs restraint.
Firstly, power distance, related to the different solutions to the basic problem of
human inequality. Basically in this dimension there is a dispute between conservative
thoughts and liberal thoughts, where the differences between Large Power Distance
and Small Power Distance are exposed, in which power is seen on the one hand as a
basic fact of society antedating good or evil: its legitimacy is irrelevant, and on the other
hand its use should be legitimate and is subject to criteria of good and evil.
Secondly, uncertainty avoidance, related to the level of stress in a society in the face
of an unknown future. Uncertainty avoidance is not the same as risk avoidance; it deals
with a society's tolerance for ambiguity. It indicates to what extent a culture programs its
members to feel either uncomfortable or comfortable in unstructured situations. In this
part the author shows ten differences between weak and strong uncertainty avoidance
societies. In the weak uncertainty inherent in life is accepted and each day is taken as it
comes and in the strong uncertainty inherent in life is felt as a continuous threat that
must be fought.
Thirdly, Individualism on the one side versus its opposite, Collectivism, as a societal,
not an individual characteristic, is the degree to which people in a society are integrated
into groups. On the individualist side we find cultures in which the ties between
individuals are loose: everyone is expected to look after him/herself and his/her
immediate family. On the collectivist side we find cultures in which people from birth
onwards are integrated into strong, cohesive in-groups, often extended families (with
uncles, aunts and grandparents) that continue protecting them in exchange for
unquestioning loyalty and oppose other in groups.
Fifth, Long Term versus Short Term Orientation, related to the choice of focus for
people's efforts: the future or the present and past. The dimension turned out to be
strongly correlated with recent economic growth. In short-term orientation, most
important events in life occurred in the past or take place now and in long-term
orientation, most important events in life will occur in the future
