Virtualization features The 4th generation of MSA provides support for a powerful set of data services enabled with a new virtualized
array system architecture. Existing MSA 2040 customers have access to these new features via a firmware
upgrade. Features supported in new virtualization firmware are:
• Thin Provisioning. This feature allows storage allocation of physical storage resources only once they are consumed by
an application.
• Wide Striping. By leveraging virtualized storage “pools”, MSA 2040 users can leverage wide striping technology to
simplify volume expansion and to facilitate full utilization of all resources allocated to a specific volume.
• SSD Read Cache. Improves random read performance by allowing an SSD to be utilized as an extension of the MSA 2040
controller cache.
• Automated Tiering (with Performance and Archive Tiering). Utilizing a real-time I/O engine to intelligently position
data on the most appropriate “tier” of storage. For customers leveraging MSA’s Performance tiering capacities (paid
software feature), users will see improved application response times on both read and write activities for frequently
accessed data and better utilization of storage resources through the ability to move data which has not been accessed
for long periods of time off to more cost effective Midline SAS HDDs (Archive Tiering).
• Virtualized Snapshot services. Created specifically for MSA’s virtualized storage architecture, the MSA 2040 will be able
to utilize Redirect-on-Write technology to provide better snapshot performance and the ability to create more complex
snapshots with simplified snapshot management.
• New Web User Interface. The new virtualized array architecture also comes with a powerful, embedded Storage
Management Utility which will make setup and management of the MSA 2040 and these new features a breeze. Users
familiar with MSA’s previous Web UI will have the option to continue on or take advantage of the new UI.

Adaptive Optimization
Dynamically and automatically move data from Tier 1 to Tier 0 to ensure your most frequently
accessed pages are on your fastest tier. To balance cost and performance, Adaptive
Optimization enforces extremely efficient use of valuable SSD capacity, by keeping the SSD tier
full and applying change thresholds to ensure data reads and writes are not impacted. This
feature is available on the StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid and StoreVirtual VSA.
StoreVirtual Snapshots
Create thinly provisioned, instant point-in-time copies of data on a per-volume basis. Customers
can recover individual files from the volume or rollback an entire volume. Snapshots are thinly

HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software solves the problem of inefficient capacity utilization
by breaking the traditional link between allocated and purchased capacity. Demand
for thin provisioning solutions combined with increased attention to data center power
consumption has put pressure on vendors to introduce thin provisioning solutions, but bolt-on
implementations can’t deliver the simplicity or the efficiency of thin provisioning.
With HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software, capacity is dedicated and configured autonomically
on a just-in-time basis, and without active management. Rather than creating separate pools of

allowing disk capacity to be purchased only as from 1 MB to 17 GB, HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning uses a fine-grained, 16 KB allocation unit to

HP 3PAR Thin Conversion software leverages the zero-detection capabilities within the HP
3PAR StoreServ Gen4 ASIC to drive the conversion of inefficient “fat” volumes on legacy arrays
to more efficient, higher utilization “thin” volumes on HP 3PAR Storage. This “thinning” of
volumes enables data centers to meet “green IT” targets, reduce wasted space, and increase
utilization rates. Because the fat-to-thin conversion mechanism is built into the array hardware,
volume conversions take place inline at wire speed while preserving service levels, and without

StoreServ Storage almost by 50 percent or more without the need to invest in professional services.
What good are thin provisioning savings if they can’t be preserved over time? HP 3PAR Thin
Persistence software means that thin volumes on HP 3PAR StoreServ stay as lean and efficient
as possible by leveraging the Gen4 ASIC to reclaim unused space associated with deleted
data—simply, quickly, and nondisruptively. Writing and deleting large amounts of data can
leave unused space within thin volumes. Even lots of small writes and deletions can eventually
reduce the efficiency of thin volumes. This logical deletion of data that doesn’t actually free up
unused space creates a hidden utilization penalty that can add up significantly over time.
Means that thin volumes on the HP 3PAR
StoreServ Storage stay as lean and efficient as HP 3PAR Thin Persistence software reclaims this unused space to increase capacity efficiency,

HP 3PAR Thin Clone software acts as an extension of Thin Deduplication for server virtualization
environments, providing host-assisted deduplication that produces non-duplicative VM clones
for Microsoft Hyper V and VMware ESXi.
HP 3PAR Virtual Copy software flexibly delivers instant, point-in-time (PIT) copies of your data
so that you can share and protect data from any application simply and affordably. You can use
HP 3PAR Virtual Copy software to stay ahead of the innovation curve—for example, you can
enable rapid application recovery—while containing costs with a “thin-aware” implementation
that reduces the amount of physical capacity that is being consumed by your data—and
without sacrificing performance, availability, or versatility. Most traditional copy solutions
lack flexibility and require an investment in online capacity to be considered economical. HP
3PAR Virtual Copy software is a reservationless, nonduplicative copy-on-write product that
consumes capacity only for changed data—in fine grained increments, and without the need to
duplicate changed data within a snapshot tree.
HP 3PAR Remote Copy software dramatically reduces the cost of remote data replication and
DR by leveraging thin copy technology, enabling multi site and multi mode replication with both
midrange and high-end arrays, and reducing the need for professional services.
HP 3PAR Remote Copy software offers fast and autonomic DR configuration; it can be set up and
tested almost in minutes, from a single window. This software leverages the HP 3PAR Thin Built
In ASIC to utilize expensive remote copy bandwidth efficiently. With support for synchronous
long-distance replication, you can have an affordable, multi site alternative for achieving low
recovery time objectives (RTOs) and zero-data-loss recovery point objectives (RPOs) with
complete distance flexibility.

HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization software is an autonomic storage tiering tool that provides you
with the ability to react quickly and nondisruptively to changing application and infrastructure
requirements. 3PAR Dynamic Optimization enables organizations to achieve improved data
QoS levels at a low cost—at all times—across all stages of the disk-based data lifecycle. It
enables you to nondisruptively alter the service levels associated with a storage volume (RAID
level, subsystem failure protection level, drive type, stripe width, or radial placement) and to
Alleviates costly and time-consuming QoS-level rebalance storage volumes with a single click. Policy Advisor for HP 3PAR Dynamic Optimization
management by giving organizations the ability to software is an add-on application that analyzes how volumes on the HP 3PAR Storage System
react autonomically to changing application and are using physical disk space and makes intelligent, autonomic adjustments to enable improved
infrastructure requirements volume distribution and tiering of storage volumes.
The technology behind HP 3PAR Virtual Domains software is capable of providing thousands of
protected virtual private arrays within a single, massively scalable HP 3PAR StoreServ system.
By providing secure administrative segregation of users, hosts, and application data, HP 3PAR
Virtual Domains software allows hosting providers to deliver virtual private array services and
enterprise IT organizations to deliver “self-service” storage that is both secure and capable of
high QoS levels. Through consolidation onto the massively parallel and dynamically tiered HP
3PAR StoreServ system, individual user groups and applications achieve greater storage service
levels (performance, availability, and functionality) than at pre-consolidation levels while using
less infrastructure. HP 3PAR Virtual Domains software is ideal for both internal and external
storage service providers, as well as for any enterprise deploying a converged infrastructure.
HP 3PAR Virtual Lock software is designed to help HP 3PAR StoreServ customers meet data
governance and eDiscovery needs more efficiently and flexibly than with existing storage
products. HP 3PAR Virtual Lock software enables you to protect data volumes and volume
copies from intentional or unintentional deletions. During the user-specified retention period,
volumes and copies can be read but are protected against deletion, even by an administrator
with the highest level user privileges.
19
Family guide | HP Disk Storage Systems
HP 3PAR Virtual Lock software is “thin aware,” so it works on both standard and thin-
provisioned storage volume copies and is completely compatible with HP 3PAR Virtual Copy
software, HP 3PAR Remote Copy software, and HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software.
HP 3PAR File Persona software is designed to enable a rich set of file protocols and file data
services. By unlocking File Persona capabilities, system administrators gain the ability to
provision file shares and block volumes from a single user interface. The software comprises
of two sets, namely Block Persona which is ideal for virtualization, database and application
workloads and File Persona which enables home directory consolidation, group / departmental
shares, corporate shares and custom cloud applications—all from truly Converged controllers,
with truly agile capacity, designed for truly unified management.
The software integrates with the OS clustering software (Microsoft Cluster Service in Microsoft
Windows) and the array-based remote mirroring software (HP 3PAR Remote Copy software)
on storage to automate failover and failback between sites. This dual integration enables the
Cluster Service to verify the status of the storage as well as the server cluster. This enables the
correct failover and failback decisions to be made, which reduces downtime and accelerates
recovery—without human intervention.

• Block Zero is a new vSphere feature that offloads large, block-level write operations of zeros
from virtual servers to the HP 3PAR array, boosting efficiency during several common vSphere
operations, including the initialization of eager zeroed thick virtual disks and the allocation of
new file blocks for thin-provisioned virtual disks. With the HP 3PAR software plug-in for VAAI,
these data movement and write operations now have “zero cost,” which frees valuable server,
storage, and network resources so that organizations can increase both VM performance and
density.

HP XP7 High Availability software
HP XP7 High Availability (HA) Software is an Active-Active High Availability Solution offering
on HP XP7 Storage. The high availability feature is based on XP7 Multi Array Virtualization
capability. HP XP7 High Availability Software supports two use cases: Active-Active HA and
Active-Active Access.
• Active-Active HA provides 100% storage uptime from a DR configuration even if an array and/
or entire datacenter goes offline. An XP7 High Availability configuration with two XP7 systems
is architected for 15 nines average availability.
• Active-Active Access provides non-disruptive, transparent VM and/or clustered application
mobility between hosts or servers at the same or different sites.
The HA Virtual Storage Machine feature is new to the XP product line. Multi Array Virtualization
(MAV) provides the virtualization architecture software to setup local or clustered mirrored
volumes that look the same to any supported Host multi-path/cluster software. MAV replicates
the data across XP7 arrays up to a synchronous distance and provides delta re-sync capability
in case of failure/maintenance. HA can be combined with any of the other traditional mirroring
program product like XP7 Business Copy, Fast Snap to make additional copies. HA requires a
quorum device located on an external storage device.
Host then can use generic multi-path solutions for Active-Active access, load balancing as the
Virtual Storage Machine hides and handles HA complexity.
