Evaluation

I like this shoot in terms of the new viewpoints and techniques I experimented with, however
compared to my previous shoots exploring modern architecture, I don’t like it so much.

I used a black and white filter on all of the final images in this shoot because I feel like it suits the old
architecture better than colour would. Despite this, I feel as though the dark black and white could
make my audience feel trapped which isn’t good. I wanted to make my images feel spacious
throughout this project but the images in this shoot don’t because they are so dark and present a
confining nature. This could make it hard for the viewer to interpret and understand the images as the
dark nature of the images could be too overwhelming.

I think I did a good job at conveying my meaning in this shoot as I did a lot better at looking up and
making it obvious that this was my intention. This gave the viewers a new outlook on architecture
which they might not be given in their daily lives.

I used a fast shutter speed and low aperture for all of these images so that they came out crisp clear
and the details within the architecture were noticeable to the viewer as this was a huge part fo my
meaning. These technical components were also very useful when to came to editing the images in
black and white as it meant the tones were already very similar to how they were in real life. This
meant that I didn’t have to adjust the highlights and shadows at all and could focus solely on the
brightness and contrast once they had been converted to black and white images.

If I was to shoot old architecture again I would probably use a film camera as I think that this might
give off a cool effect. I also think that there is an association with film cameras and old architecture
because the old buildings were built at a time when film cameras were the only thing around, before
digital cameras and editing softwares existed which gives the viewer a bit of nostalgia looking at the
photographs.

Overall I think this shoot is good at conveying my meaning however the individual photographs could
have been more spacious if in colour. Saying that, the black and white suits the old architecture well
and if I was to shoot old architecture again I would keep with the black and white effect, just maybe
using a film camera instead.
