Line Segments
Grade: 9

Guided notes for line segment presentation

● For introduction find the Ca standards and Express what the lesson is going to
be.

For the hook explain how all students use line segments everyday whether it be in video
games or in real life. In video games when they travel from point A to point B that's
creating a line segment.
WARM UP

● Ask the class what they're definition of a line segment is before the start of the
lesson this answer can and should be wrong but is asked to see predetermined
knowledge on the lesson.
● Go over objectives for today's lesson
● Go over the vocabulary that is needed for this lesson and talk about all definitions
and why they are important.

LESSON

● Go through the slides and make sure whenever one of the vocabulary words is
used to put it in bold and explain how the definition goes with the problem or
segment you just went over.
● Explain coordinates and distance and also give the equation for how to find the
distance in between them which is represented by A - B.

LESSON

● Explain the use of constructing segments. Make sure you explain that
construction of segments don't have to be exact but they should be very good
representations of what you think they should be or look like.

● Give monitoring questions and make the students construct lines from example
in the presentation make sure they are using their compasses and using them
effectively and correctly.
LESSON PART 2

● Explain what it means for a point to be between two other points. Show the
example and show the equation for it.
● Give example problems with hints. These can be tricky and confusing when
drawing and finding what point represents which number so leave little hints on
the slide and during this time walk around and help students if needed. Keep
eyes on all of them to see who needs help.

MIDPOINT AND BISECTING

● Give the definition of both midpoint and bisecting and give the equation that they
will be using.
● Next give an example problem. This is the hardest part of the whole lesson so
present the problem and walk around and help students. Make sure no matter
what at the end you walk through the problem yourself and explain all steps to
the conclusion.

CONCLUSION:
● This is the time you want your students to do their own thinking and think of a
time they used line segments in real life but didn't realize they were doing so.
After they explain their situation make them relive the situation but this time as if
they know line segments. So have them write up a mathematical solution to their
problem. Make sure it is thorough and well thought out.
