The purpose of instrumentation is to ascertain the load distribution characteristics of soil supporting the pile shaft and to establish the design of the pile. Test pile UTP-2 was installed on 08 February 2011. The load test on the instrumented pile was commenced on 24 February 2011 and completed on 01 March 2011. TEST PILE, INSTRUMENTATION AND SOIL DETAILS The test pile UTP-2 was a 800 mm diameter bored pile, total embedded length of 24.2 m. Pile instrumentation consisted of 28 vibrating wire type strain gauges (WWSGs) at 09 different levels and 3 telltale extensometers. Toe of telltale #TT1 was at 4.7 m, #TT2 was at 16.7 m and #173 was at 24.2 m below existing ground level. Figure 1 shows the layout of the instrumentation. VIBRATING WIRE STRAIN GAUGES The vibrating wire strain gauges works on the principle that the natural frequency of a wire changes as its length changes. Thus, by measuring the change in frequency, the deformation can be obtained, and hence the strain. The vibrating wire readout device has the feature of converting the change in frequency to strain readout in micro-strain (te). Based on the measured strain, the corresponding stress can be calculated. If strain gauges are installed at intervals along the pile shaft length, then the load distribution along the pile shaft may be computed, gn Mtry, 8 ASiy ws APS %e 7 & APS ASIA PDA ENTERPRISE PTE LTD 4.0 SHAFT RESISTANCE DETERMINATION 5.0 Average unit skin friction between any two sections of the pile is calculated by the change in loads divided by the circumferential area between the two sections. RESULTS ASSESSMENT 51 LOAD-MOVEMENT BEHAVIOUR OF THE PILE During the first cycle of the MLT, the maximum load applied was 377.0 tons (1.0 x WL) and the pile top settlement was 2.00 mm. The extensometer readings for TT4 (4.7 m), TT2 (16.7 m) and TT3 (24.2 m) were 1.40 mm, 1.92 mm and 2.40 mm respectively. In the second cycle, when the applied load was 754.0 tons (2.0 x WL), the corresponding pile top settlement was 8.75 mm. The extensometer readings for TT1 (4.7 m), TT2 (16.7 m) and TT3 (24.2 m) were 3.81 mm, 6.30 mm and 7.15 mm respectively. In the third cycle, when the applied load was 1320.0 tons (3.5 x WL), the corresponding pile top settlement was 17.75 mm. The extensometer readings for TT1 (4.7 m), TT2 (18.7 m) and TTS (24.2 m) were 5.65 mm, 10.23 mm and 11.89 mm respectively. APS ASIA PDA ENTERPRISE PTE LTD 5.2 LOAD TRANSFER DISTRIBUTION, UNIT SKIN FRICTION AND UNIT END BEARING 5.2.1 Load Distribution and Transfer Characteristics The load transfer curves are shown in Figure 2 to Figure 4. The secant modulus, Es is calculated by first determining the tangent modulus, M of the pile. The tangent modulus chart is plotted and shown in Appendix A. The secant modulus can be obtained from the equation E, = 0.5 e+ B where a = -0.0087 is the gradient and & = 48.50 is the y-intercept of the tangent modulus chart. The load transfer curves, indicating the load distribution along the shaft, were derived from computations based on the measured changes in strain gauge readings and estimated pile properties (cross-sectional areas and modulus of elasticity). Computation made is based on the as-built details known during the vibrating wire strain gauges installation. ENTER, oh tTEhp, PS s Guy aa® z & APS ASIA PDA ENTERPRISE PTE LTD Load transferred (P) at each level is calculated as follows: P= Awse) * Es * Ac where Awwse) = ‘Change in strain gauge readings. Es ‘Secant Modulus Ac Pile cross-sectional area. The difference between the loads at any two levels represents the shaft load carried by the portion of pile between the two levels. 5.2.2 Unit Skin Friction Average unit skin friction between any two sections of the pile is calculated by the change in loads divided by the perimetral area between the two sections. The mobilised unit shaft frictional resistance versus the strain between adjacent instrumented levels is computed and the results are tabulated in Table 3,6 & 9. Some fluctuations are anticipated in the skin friction due to variations in subsurface conditions. The recorded data on instrument levels were used in calculating the unit skin friction values. pn tNTERp, 2 om 2 “APS er asa APS ASIA PDA ENTERPRISE PTE LTD The estimated mobilised unit skin friction from the load transfer curves at 350% working load, based on VWSG results are tabulated below: Depth (ny ‘Sai Profle Tage SPT] Nobiised Average From From | Unit Skin Ffcton Borelog Report SI Report (tonimé) 000-470 ‘Soft Sandy Ciay Soft Sty Clay “4 28 410-770 Soft Sily Clay / Sotto Stiff Sandy Cay ~4 53 790~11.20 Soft to SUff Sandy Cty / Soft Sandy Sit =" a8 1120-1420 Soft to Stif Sandy Sit / Soft Sity Clay ~29 103 1420~ 16.70 Soft Sity Clay -35 168 1670~ 19.70 Soft Sily Clay 166 1970-2270 ‘Soft Sy Clay / Moderately Strong Grante"* 32~>>100 woe 2270-2320 Moderately Song Granite >>100, e42 2320-2370 Mederately Svong Granite >>100 waz Note: ** Moderately Strong Granite at 20.0 m below. 5.2.3 Unit End Bearing From the load transfer curve at pile toe location (23.7 m), the mobilised end bearing at 1320.0 tons was approximately 44.8 tons.
