Cancer, a Deadly Disease: Myths and facts

OBJECTIVES:

Cancer, a generic form of a large group of diseases, is the second leading cause of
death globally. According to WHO estimate, about one in six deaths is due to
cancer and this number is expected to rise by about 70% in next two decades.
Unfortunately, more than 70% of cancer deaths occurs in low and middle-income
countries. Yet, there is an overwhelming scarcity of knowledge and awareness
among general population, contributing to fear and rejection of cancer patients,
ultimately leading to poor disease management.
This course is aimed to provide a basic understanding of this deadly disease to
students coming from diverse disciplines. We will talk about the history and
biology of this disease. We will also discuss risk factors, prevention, diagnosis and
treatments of cancer.

At the end, this course will greatly enhance the general awareness about the
commonest of all non-communicable diseases among our students.
COURSE CONTENT:

Cancer and its general properties/hallmarks.


Facts and Myths about cancer.
History and biology of cancer.
Life Style, risk factors and prevention of cancer.
Cancer therapies and drug resistance.
MODE OF TEACHING:

Lectures.
Videos.
GRADING SCHEME (Subject to change):

Mid-term exam (MCQ): 40 marks.


Final assignment: 60 marks.
