Problem 1 (20%)

An automotive air conditioner cools 250 ft3/min of moist air at a pressure of 13 psia from
95 ∞F and 35% relative humidity to saturation at 45 ∞F. How much moister must be
drained from the evaporator per hour?

Problem 2 (30%)

A multizone air handler provides air (purely fresh) to several zones. One interior zone
contains computer equipment with only a sensible load. The coil in the unit cools air from
85 ∞F db and 70 ∞F wb to 53 ∞F db and 90% relative humidity (RH). (Assume standard
sea-level pressure.)
a. If the zone is to be maintained at 75 ∞F and 50% RH, what percentage of the supply
air to the zone bypasses the coil?
b. If the amount of air supplied to the zone is 2500 cfm what is the cooling load for the
zone?

Problem 3 (50%)

Consider a space heating system designed as shown below. The total space heating load is
500,000 Btu/hr and the space design conditions are 70 ∞F db and 30% RH. Outdoor air
enters the preheat coil at 6 ∞F and essentially 0% RH whre it is heated to 60 ∞F and mixed
with return air. The mixture is first heated and then humidified in a separate process to
105 ∞F and 30% RH for supply to the space. Saturated vaper at 2 psi is used for
humidification. Twenty five percent of the supply air is outdoor air by mass.
a. Sketch the psychrometric processes
b. Compute the supply air volume flow rate
c. Compute the heat transfer rates in both coils
d. Compute the steam flow rate.
