2. About SDRC
2.1 Organizational Overview:

Our Existence

Siddha Development Research and Consultancy (SDRC) is a social enterprise incorporated in the year
2010 and committed to enabling social change initiatives. We endeavour to address the “data rich but
information poor” and guesswork situations in the delivery lifecycle of development programs through
advanced information management and evidence-based development planning. We aim to
empower development sector stakeholders with quick, targeted and actionable information to
improve the quality of life.

Our Enterprise

We combine open source IT technologies with custom tailored management systems to design
paperless data flows that generate efficient and actionable insights. SDRC offers research-based
services to address critical information needs at all stages of a program cycle. We deliver learning
initiatives to leverage appropriate technologies for data collection, collation, analysis and sharing.

Our Team

Functioning as a team of reflective professionals, we practice the following core values:

1. Maintain integrity, trust, transparency, and respect in our transactions.
2. Diffuse our learning to empower, engender, and emancipate stakeholders.
3. Be humble and critically self-reflective of our actions.

objectives. Our core team (CT) comprises of
experts drawn from following domains: Social
Research (including demographers, large scale
sample survey specialists); Technology
(including technology experts from web,
mobile, and database domains); Data & Data
Analytics (including data scientists, Artificial
Intelligence experts); and Project Delivery
(including product owner, scrum master who
own the project charter). Reporting
relationships within the agile teams are flat and
cross functional.

3. Organizational Experience
3.1 Research and Impact Evaluation

In over nine years of its existence, as a research organization, SDRC has got involved in various action
research projects and handled various field as well as desk-based research assignments with diverse
stakeholders ranging from Government Agencies, International Agencies, Civil Society Organizations,
and Community Groups. Following an action research approach, SDRC has

- Facilitated research studies and supported in integration of Result-Based-Management

framework in development programmes.
- Provided integrated data management solutions, including data acquisition, data processing,
data analysis, and data dissemination
- Built, deployed and managed appropriate monitoring and information systems and solutions
- Handled baselines-midlines and end line evaluations of social development interventions.

The social research studies conducted by SDRC have used an effective mix of both qualitative as well
as quantitative research methodologies in answering the research questions and generating
conclusive evidences. SDRC has worked towards monitoring solutions that enable quick evidence-
based decision making. In doing so and creating the knowledge and advocacy products, gender
sensitivity and social inclusion have been a cross cutting perspective in data analysis at SDRC.

Its experience in using multi-staged sampling techniques coupled with participatory research
approaches such as PRA and PLA are some of the key aspects that lend credibility and grounding to its
research experience. Besides participatory research techniques, through effective use of open source
technology in data collection, collation and sharing stages, SDRC also minimizes the use of paper, a
step towards environmental sustainability. Mobile and web-based data collection and sharing
processes are also an integral part of SDRC development strategy.

3.2 Management Information Systems:

The solutions developed at SDRC are customized to cater the requirements of almost real time
automation of information flow from project intervention district, state and national level to enable
timely review of progress and project implementation. A typical diagrammatic representation of the
technical architecture is given below.

3.2.1 Technology Landscape

A representation of the various technologies used is provided in the table below.

3.2.2 Open Source Philosophy

Open source is an integral part of SDRC development strategy. We believe that the true impact of
software, in human development context, can be realized only by fostering an open source
environment, where in best of minds from across the globe come together to develop great software
for social development.
Using open source technology enables the availability of the software and associate source codes,
development road map, known issues and other artefacts in the public domain under GPL creative

commons license. This shall enable users to branch out code from the online repository and encourage
collaboration with like-minded software developers who are willing to contribute to the system.
Past projects including the SDRC Collect project has resulted in new functionalities that were offered
back to the open source community. SDRC is proud to share that the new features developed by us
were integrated into the ODK application by University of Washington which manages the ODK project.

3.3 Capacity Building:

SDRC believes in high quality learning from happy learners. Training support will focus on
andragogical learning methods: case study, experiential learning, peer learning, problem solving and
real-world application. The emphasis will be on “learning by doing” and applying their learning to a
real-world data challenge.
Each of the training modules will be learner centric and will be flexible enough for learners to learn at
their own pace and style. Participants will deconstruct the problem to identify the underlying
characteristics, systems, and components. This interactive process will result in an emerging theory or
pattern. Participants will then get to apply the theory on a typical use case to reinforce their
understanding. They will be able to relate the concept and the underlying theory to their relevant
context and peer sharing will reinforce the concepts as well as enable gestalt learning.

Each training activity will be mapped to the following elements:

• Session Title
• Session Objective
• Session wise Content
• Preparatory Activities
• Session Activities
• Assessment (pre and post)

The facilitator needs to be adept in observing group dynamics and quickly make course corrections
in order to stay tuned to the learners needs. All the learning initiatives will be in a blended learning
model wherein participants will be encouraged through the use of virtual discussion groups and
forums to share their classroom learning and real-world application in addition to learning by the use
of computer-based tutorials.
